I respectfully disagree -- the caliper bolts are not torqued enough to stretch. The only reason for replacement is the threadlock. There are similar applications such as the bolts that hold the W123 differential support bracket to the chassis. You could not possibly torque those bolts enough to stretch them -- you'd tear the captive nuts out of the chassis. It is puzzling why Mercedes does not just say "clean threads and renew threadlock."

Jeremy

Stretch bolts have a min diameter spec, so you can tell if they've been stretched too much.

Sixto pointed out to me that the FSM's stretch spec for 603 head bolts is on the order of 3 mm. That's a lot of stretch!

IMO; only total desperation could tempt me to re-use any torque to yield bolt.

In the past, I have been forced by the shop owners/vehicle owners to re-use torque to yield bolts, with catastrophic results...

So you recommend a new set of 26 head bolts for the 603 [or any] engine? That's OK with me, I certainly don't want to snap one in the middle of the sequence.

Correct.

During engine assembly it is only annoying to break a bolt..

My common fear is a used/over stressed bolt snapping After the engine is totally assembled = after it leaves the shop.

How to install cv boot without a flexxgun

I will be replacing the cracked inner and outer boots of my 300d. I found this youtube video (see link below) on how to install cv boot without using a flexxgun. This is really ingenious! Some of you may already know this trick but it won't hurt to share.

Steps:

1) invert boot
2) grease a long cone funnel with large mouth a bit larger than the can.
3) slip the inverted boot on the funnel.
4) position the large mouth end of the funnel over the can.
5) Have a helper tug on the boot so that it slips over the can and onto the shaft.

I have not tried this. I just hope that the boot is flexible enough to be inverted without getting torn.

... videotape yourself doing it please...
the boots come with extra size for larger axles, I recommend leaving it on for grip until after you get the boots over the cans...
or you could rent the gun from me.
it's in the tool rental group.

You cannot use the Stock Type Boots as they are to thick to be stretched. Find some of the other threads with the Flexx Boot or Dorman part numbers.
Also in the other threads on the subject some have had trouble with what to lubricate the ATF Funnel with and have not had an easy time stretching the Boot over the Funnel.
Don't do any stretching on a cold day when the Boot is going to be cold and stiff.

will videotape. thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice. Perfect timing. I was about to order the stock type boots. Your point about not stretching on a cold day, it will probably help to warm up the boot by soaking in warm water. I'm thinking of using motor oil or vaseline as lubricant. I'll videotape the procedure. Hope it works.

I do not think Motor Oil will work; I believe someone has tried that. However, I would read up on the Job first.
No sense in making the same mistakes that others have made if all you need to do is spend some time reading.
