AC Refrigerant Capacities

Does anyone know the refrigerant capacity of a 1976 300D with the York piston AC compressor? I need to know how many cans of refrigerant to buy.

Thanks,
Kyle

Going with R12

Found someone who can get R12 for me, going to go with that. If it falls through, I may go the Freeze 12 route. Right now its R12. And I know Freeze 12 is 10% less. Do you know how much R12?

My manual only starts in 1977...
I think there are charts for each model.. but the figure they quote is 1.2 kg.
I also think some people who have the cars and know how much they put in have posted that in the archives...
Somewhere in the back of my memory I think I would start at around 32 -36 ounces of R-12... So to be safe I would buy 4 12 ounce cans.
Once you get the compressor to come on by putting a small amount into the system and starting the AC running then you determine your fill amount by the low and high pressures and the temperature at the time...
Your car will run just fine on SEVERAL ounces less than full charge .. but even ONE ounce over will work it to death... since the whole concept is having a good spread between the high and low sides...
and since Freeze12 is 80 percent 134a I would do everything in my power to stick with R-12.
