606 Glow Plug Observations

I had the head removed at 55K and now it is at 115K on the clock. That was in Jan of 05. Took out the GPs today and they were pretty good. I think the last time they were there for 6 years so it locked up without antisieze. The tips looked good. My impression is that it was corosion that did me in the last time. Some squeaking but no PB Blaster was used and the engine was stone cold. This time as last time, there didn't seem to be much carbon build up

Are you using any BioDiesel?

I presume you just took them out as a preventative maintenance, anti-seized them and placed back again?

I should do that as well, been 16 months or so for me.

I had one break off on me and was fortunate enough to be able to drill it out myself and not have to remove the head. My plan is to R&R the glow plugs yearly. I don't think anti-seize will help a bit, but I certainly use it just in case. Anything to help prevent that from happening again. I think the reason these plugs break off is that they are not seated properly in the first place, allowing carbon to weld the seating surface to the head. The plug on mine that broke off did not seem to have as many threads screwed in as the others. I think that not allowing them time to build up years of carbon on them is more important than anything else you can do. Just a theory.

I'm going to tackle this task (R&R GPs) on my 606 as soon as my broken left hand heals. Is it better to have the engine warm or cold when removing them?

raMBow, why do you ask about biodiesel? Are you thinking BD helps or hurts? (I've been using B20 for a little while.)

No.

Yes. Last time it was in Jan of 05 and they were Original. Broke one and had to have it drilled out. No more.

Forgive me, father, It has been 16 months since my last R&R of the GPs.

Say 3 "Hail Mary"s and get on with it.

Well I've found religion on the topic. The head on my 95 E300D will be coming off in the next day or so.

Is it necessary to buy the "glow plug reamer" tool? Or just pull & clean the glow plugs once in a while (year? 6 months?)

It has been since Jan 05 that I did the head and still, no carbon build up. In fact, when I did the head, they didn't find much to be cleaned off.

Just got the report. 5 good injectors. 1 has leaks and bad spray pattern. $57 later and I have 6 good injectors that have been pop tested to 135 bar. Injectors are in the car and running with the manifold off because I need a new O-ring for the EGR

How many miles on your car and where did you have the injectors tested?

Car racked up 55K between late 98 and early 05. Took out the prechambers and all that, had the head cleaned but there wasn't that much to clean. Sure there were some deposits on the prechamber area facing the piston but that is about it. There is some black stuff but nothing that severe in the last 60K and year and a half. The tips of the GPs had a coating of black on it that wiped off.

So, to answer your question, I didn't buy the reamer and probably wouldn't unless there was a lot of crud. The plugs jammed in the threads. Once that cleared, they came out without much fuss.

Looking at the intake and all that, I am thinking that the crud comes from both the oil fumes and the EGR. I vented my Crankcase Vent on my Powerstroke to the exhaust and found that the exhaust now has that same crud. Maybe we could reroute the crankcase to the exhaust and have less buildup in the intake tracks?

Side note, with the injectors out, and cleaned and the bad one repaired, the wife feels that the car is now much smoother running than it has ever been.

Sonce x-ing the EGR on the 98-99 is not an option, re-routing the breather seems to be the best cure for crud. A remote breather that sits on the stock oil seperator drain would work well.
