Help with 1980 300d vac. pump please

Hello, cannot find example of this in forum but vac. pump was "clacking" and now it seems there is a small rod moving in and out, fore and aft, through the front cover of the vac pump! Needless to say there is no vac. Is this major? Is the center of the cover designed as a tell tale to give like this? What will I need to repair said pump? Is there an exploded diagram of a pump on line anywhere? Thanks a lot for all info, Steve

No , not a fault indicator built in... but a major fault indicator... never heard of that...
Be careful about running it anymore until fixed... seems like I read that one style can loose the ballbearings out if it and trash other stuff in the engine....
Should be threads about it in the archives....
There are threads with good pictures about rebuilding or replacing them...
Exploded line drawing most likely to be found in the Performance Products paper catalog... don't know if they have that online also...

Do not drive the car anyplace. Either replace the pump where it is now or have it towed to the shop. I had a similar failure on my 300D, resulting in about $2500 worth of damage:

I strongly recommend dropping the oil pan and looking for debris that could cause engine damage.

wow, thanks!

Man, thankfully my wife drove it right home, just from the mailbox if I remember right, and i just cranked it to look and listen. The damage, at least visibly, is not near as bad as your posted pic. I will remove pan and pump to investigate. I did find a link to a 617 vacuum pump rebuild. I guess I will need a new front cover also. I may end up at the junkyard as the entire car only cost $1500. Thanks for the warnings, Steve

I have the mechanical section for this pump, roller arm and springs etc., I am willing to part with. Most places sell them for about $270. + shipping. I would sell mine for $130 including shipping. I have PayPal account. Let me know. This one came off a 85 300d with the single outlet.

thanks

Thanks for the internal parts offer. I will consider it as I weigh options next week. I am sure I need the cover so I may try to find an assembly. Anyone know exactly which years I can use? Thanks, Steve

You will probably need your engine serial number in addition to your vin number when looking for parts....
Often there are three styles you might find... there are three cam shafts, three sets of guiderail designs... etc .... and you may need to know what month your car was manufactured ... some changes are listed " up to 8/80 " etc...

I agree, it looks like there are two different pumps available for your year:

There also appears to be repair kits for each type:

The cheapest way may be to remove your pump and find a matching used one, then rebuild it using the appropriate kit. I would be reluctant to install a used one without a rebuild, they are all going to have high mileage.

thanks

Thanks, I am at work and will get info. off car this week. I also need the vacuum line from the pump to the brake booster with the check valve and the 2 orificed lines coming off. I keep breaking the one line off and gluing it back. I saw one on e-bay a while back, new for ~50$ and was reluctant to spend that much on a line but probably should have. Thanks, Steve

You can get the line here, but you need to get the correct one for your car. $50 would be a good deal if you find the correct line.

vac pump I.D.

I suggest going to Fastlane (see Buy Parts at top of page) find your year, model, and VIN; search for "pump" and you'll get pictures of the 2 different pumps for the 300 D. Also, remove your broken one and you'll have a better idea of what you're looking for. I went through this last year on my '80 300TD; luckily all I needed was a $26.00 diaphragm. Go slow and observe the position of every part that you take out, make photos or sketches; lay out parts in order. Note which way the diaphragm faces, which way the check valves face, etc. You can mark parts with a felt pen. This is easier than trying to figure it out after they're all jumbled. PM me if you have more questions. Steve Bean
