rebuilding the turbo is not that hard. it is a very simple device. it is a little tough to disassemble sometimes though, and you dont want to bend any vanes on the turbo.

the r and r is a bit of work too. maybe four hours or so.

How would one bend a blade? Any tricks to getting it apart? I have never done one and would love to know. Where did you source the bearings? How did you make sure everything was still within spec?

i have not done one myself but i watched my favorite machinist do mine.

the kit used to be available through an advertiser in hemmings. i think the kit was about $120. it consisted of two bushings and two seals or similar. the parts are extremely simple but getting it all apart and back together is not the easiest thing. that is why i left it to him. he made it look easy.

what they don't include in the kit is the turbo mounting gaskets. you will need those too. one each side, i believe.

turbo

I have rebuilt turbos....
The secret to rebuilding a turbo is getting it
back together in the same positon... and this requires
marking the pieces...

The next secret is to torque it to specs when your closing it up...

There very easy to rebuild... and the trick is to rebuild them early...

Its outside the home diyers ability to spin and balance a turbo shaft...

So rebuild the thing when you are loosing a little oil... long before the
shaft and impellers are damaged....

Turbo rebuild

I just rebuilt a KKK turbo on my 300SD and it wasn't too hard. There is a step by step article with about 18 pictures in the March/April 1996 Star by James Mehaffey which along with a few postings on this forum gave me the courage to try it. In the article he rebuilt a Garrett turbo which he mentions is very close to being the same.

I got a kit for my KKK from Turbo City which had instructions and diagrams. That along with the Star article got me through the procedure. but if you can't get the article, Turbo City's instructions are good enough.

The main thing you have to do is make a couple of diagrams as you disassemble the unit so that you get it aligned and balanced when you reassemble it. Be careful with the turbine wheels because they are very brittle and can break! It was a little tricky getting the iron parts apart. (the center section where it is attached to the rear part) I soaked them down with PB blaster for a couple of days and was able to get them apart. The shaft drifts out easily and the bearings come right out after you have removed the snap rings.

I do not think that my motor was sucking a lot of oil from the turbo to the manifold but the turbo sure was dripping oil externally both past the O ring on the intake side and also around the drain tube.

I just got the car back together yesterday and I am hoping that I have fixed all of the oil leaks.

Well, I took the turbo off. I should have taken pics of the process. If I remember, I'll take some while dissassembling and reassemdling the turbo and putting it back on and post them for posterity.

That would be excellent. Give me some incentive to get the KKK turbo out of the '86 which has been leaking for a couple of years.

Mine is a Garrett T3. I hear they're similar though.

I didn't know that the Klu Klux Klan made turbos. Anyways I took the housing off today, and took pics of me doing it. When I get the turbo fixed and back on, I"ll post them.

Well, I got the turbo apart, and took some pictures in the process. A word to the wise, USE A TORQUE WRENCH THAT WORKS!!!!!! Mine didn't break when it was supposed to, and the shaft broke off. But A friend had a matching shaft, so all was not lost. so, I"m off to put it back together now. I'll try to toke some more pics, although I doubt that I"ll be able to post them before a leave for 10 days.
