1980 300 SD engine stopping problem

I am having a problem with my 1980 300 SD shutting down
randomly. On local running it runs fine. When I go long
distances or run for extended time the car will just shut
down. I cannot start it right up, but must wait about 15 to
20 minutes and then it will start. It is not running hot. I
changed the cam on the timing chain, which needed changing.
It runs better but it still will shut down if I run a long distance.

Any suggestions?

Years ago, my 240d acted that way right after I bought it. Turned out to be the tank filter. It looked like a big gob of tar when pulled out.

I didn't even know they had that filter back there.

Could be fuel filters, filter screen or possibly the tank vent. Next time it happens, if possible, pop the fuel cap off. When you do this, is there a major vacuum on the tank?

Ditto "SD Blue" 's advice, and...

with the fule cap off, try to start up again.

Don't look for a vent hole in these fuel caps... these cars have a vacuum reliefe system that could be clogged. The air intake for this system on your car is probably on the left side under one of the doors. It's easy to see. If it needs cleaning, you can hook on a length of clear vinyl tubing into which you pore some diesel purge or other cleaner and then use compressed air to force this back through the line and relief valve to clean things up.
