windshield seal
Dear all.
Any suggestion of alternative windshield seal for a W116 or a W123 diesel? Factory one is real pricy, i would like to look into the alternative like the ones @ JcWhitney. Cost $85 vs $30 that makes you think...

dieselgiant has 123 windshield gaskets for about $65? Free shipping? Fastlane is about the same price.

I've heard lots of *****ing from guys who have gone cheap and bought aftermarket rubber seals. In this case I think you get what you pay for.

OK, Mr Cheap Guy here. I have installed 3 Benz windows and 3 others with cheap seals and have not had any installation problems. I have never used an OEM seal so I can't compare, but I think the "fact" that non-OEM seals are "bad" is hype. Not as good, maybe, but you pays your money......

Whether the aftermarket seals are as functional or as durable is certainly open for discussion.......... |

guys,
we are diverging from the subject. as somebody above pointes out coupe seals ans 116 seals are very pricey and the alternative is particularly interesting particularly when you want to unload the car. What i am looking for is an alternative aftermarket... If it only last 10 years.. so be it. Anyway i am far from sure that the OEM are supposed to last much longer. The one on the 116 was actually chaged 10 years ago and was already falling apart (installed by mercedes dealer in Orlando)

I purchased one OEM trunkseal, it was from Fastlane and of poor quality. I replaced it several months later with an OE seal. The price difference was $30. Although it was greater that time because I did the job twice.
Mercedes uses very high quality rubber parts, as anyone with a 20-30 year old MB knows. If you purchase a new OE seal to replace one that is 20 years old, the new one should last 20 years as well. I purchase only OE rubber parts usually from the dealer. They cost a bit more but the quality is there. But the cost difference is not as much as you think, I think the rear glass seal on the SDL only cost me $20-$30 more for the OE one.

When contemplating the savings of an aftermarket part over an OE part, think about what you will likely say while you are in the process of doing the same job over again in a short period of time. That's the thing, doing it over. Nobody wants to do it over. The objective for me is to do it right the first time so that I do not have to do it over. Those aftermarket windshield seals have a nasty reputation for making people do it over. The savings are not worth it in my case.
If you are going to 'unload' the car, it would be far more considerate for the next guy if you just didn't replace the thing than to say 'I replaced the windshield gasket' and expect the car to sell for more than it would have if you hadn't replaced the gasket, knowing that the windshield will likely leak again real soon. If you didn't use OE, it doesn't count. You are selling your problems to him. If you replace the seal you would feel better about asking a premium based on that if you used an OE seal vs an aftermarket. This is a Mercedes after all, not the kind of car you want to cheap out on. I don't care how old it is. The thing about the OE vs aftermarket are the bottom corners. OEs are one piece molded, aftermarkets are spliced and glued. They don't seal as well. Those splice points leak. I'd have questions about the very rubber compound used to mold the seal as well. With these cars, the aftermarket parts are generally and unilaterally a waste of time. Ask anybody. Doesn't matter if it's a vacuum connector, oil cooler hose, shock absorber, windshield gasket, radiator, return fuel line. The OE part is always the one you want because it's the one that works. The others don't. If you put that aftermarket windshield seal in that car and it leaks afterward, you cannot honestly say that you weren't advised against using aftermarket. If you expect top dollar when you sell, you had better use OE. Anyone who will have the means to give you top dollar will ask if you used OE, and will likely be smart enough to tell.
