Best $11.95 I have ever spent...

I replaced the sway bar links on my 1985 300D td this past weekend.

It is truly amazing how much better the car handles(no back end jumping to the side over bumps or potholes), corners like a dream. Best part is the car is so much more quieter - my 10 year old daughter even asked me where the "rattle" was!

Check yours - took me all of 15 minutes, a 17mm open end wrench and a 17mm socket to replace. These cars are truly amazing - even more so with a little attention and tlc!

Thanks,
Jason

I also have a noise (rattle, creaks, etc) when the car is rolling at low speeds - I suspected the sway bar links and wanted to replace them...

When I inspected them the other day, to my surprise they didn't look anything like the replacement parts I saw in pictures on Fastlane... the ones on Fastlane looked like they were one plastic piece with a bolt on each end and the ones I have have on the car now have a 'ball-joint' - what's the deal?!

Take a closer look at the picture and you will see the ball joint. The ball joint is covered by a semi-transparent flexible boot, just behind the hex fitting. The new links are just like the original. Buy a pair and put them on.

Was it $11+ for each or is it per set of two?!

Yup. That was the first thing I did to rag doll when I brought her home. The links were so worn out I thought the rear end was going to come apart!

MercFan - $11.95 for both

Cheap and worthwhile fix. I wish it had been the first thing I did to her now!

Thanks,
Jason

Missing lynx

The least expensive source for the W123 rear sway bar link appears to be ********AZ, $6.29 each. Link:

http://www.***************/search/productx.aspx?sid=cs244l55bq3dfm55yo4lwq55&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193790@300DT&year=1985&cid=27@Suspension%20System&gid=7580@Stabilizer/Sway%20Bar%20Link

Note that I have not added shipping. Other sources might have a better deal when shipping is added on.

Rats, I just got an $85 blower motor here, should have gotten the links at the same time, shipping is free over $50.

I did this to both of our SD's about 5 months ago....amazing difference!! Quiet over bumps, drives better and feels more stable. Indeed the best $11 ever spent! My old ones were likely original, they looked horrid! The boot was gone, and the links were so loose that when I took them out I could move the link back and forth and the ball joint and connector would flop around... Took all of 35 mins per car to replace too, nice, easy and rewarding job.

Now I have to fix my parking brake.....all the sudden it stopped working completely, and the pedal is springy.....I bet a cable or something snapped, as the pads/shoes are only about 7 months old.....

Lately I've developed quite a rattle in the back somewhere, so I'll be checking on these tomorrow. Maybe that is why I had to mess with the shaft/link on my SLS valve assy..........

What a difference...

Just installed a new pair on my car last night - worked late on it but it was worth it. Took it for a spin this morning - no rattles and bumps; quiet, excellent... I'm very happy.

It's so nice and quiet my wife wants to know what it would take to install the same part on my rear end...
