Mileage on 674.4 Mile non-stop trip

I "bee lined" it home on Friday from Ohio at the end of a business trip so I could relax for the 4th of July Holiday.

Door to door from Parma, Ohio to Onset, Massachusetts was 674.4 miles
Fueled up with LSD Fuel (500ppm sulfur) at the beginning.
Cruise control set at 70mph when I could.
Made 3 pit stops with no refueling.....I just can't hold it like I use to!
Tavel time 11hrs 40min.
Fuel filled to the neck at the end of trip...the same as at the start of the trip.

Made it all the way on less than a tank on the 98 E-300TD (19.34gals)!
The mileage comes out to be 34.87MPG which is pretty consistant for the car.

I would like to try a marathon run like that with USLD (15ppm sulfur) when it becomes available and also a Biodiesel Blend.
Cheers!

There are not many cars you can spend this kind of time driving without feeling burnt out. Am reminded that MB's 1972 280SL set the record at Daytona oval track 24hrs averaging speeds at/near 100mph, beating Porches and Ferraris...... Not because it was the fastest car, but because it caused least amount of stress on the driver.

I make a similar run from Long Island to Cincinnati. 685 miles. It always breaks down the same:

4 hours to Harrisburg
3 1/3 hours to the Ohio River (holding 70 all the way)
3 1/3 hours to Cincinnati (again holding 70)

Stops add to this time........usually stop for fuel and a meal in Harrisburg.

Fuel economy is typically 29mpg with the SDL without a/c.

I'm too happy getting 30mpg at 80+ than I am getting 34mpg at 70.

Next week I'm taking the 300D on a little run from CO to VT, about 2000 miles each way. I'll try to keep track of the mileage, I haven't really checked it in a while.

I made it from Newnan, GA to Gary, IN nonstop on one tank of diesel in my
96 E300. I set the cruise control on 75mph and rarely had to slow (99% interstate). Distance was about 780 miles and nearly 12 hours worth of driving. I'll never do that again.

Yep...except for the traffic back ups at the NY tolls there isn't much on Rt. 90 that stresses you out driving a diesel Mercedes. Its like sitting on your living room couch. Any other vehicle I would have been so "road stressed" I would have had problems writting my name after being on the road for a week.
I am good for about 14 hours of driving....after that I feel like I have vertigo!

Craig! wow!....you are a real Road Warrior or a masochist! Hope you have a good women waiting your arrival in Vermont....Zow!

I just got 27.4 mpg's on a trip up north last week, I went about 650 miles total, 450 of it was at 75mph and the rest was 55-60 back road driving (in the middle of nowhere to a campground) I had two people, two dogs, and about 400-500lbs of camping gear in the trunk, as well as my hitch mounted bike carrier with two bikes on it. Amazing mileage. I filled up with LSD (500ppm) at speedway with 407 miles on my trip odo thinking I was near empty, but to the filler neck full I could only fit 15.014 gallons in! 27.4 mpg! I was amazed and very pleased, as I was expecting about 21-22!! I wonder if the ULSD will make any difference....I guess we'll see.....

The best I ever got was driving a couple hundred miles at 55-60mph nonstop, I managed 29.8mpg (5 people in car and camping gear that time too)

Yep, I agree. There is NFW that I could go more than 400 miles in a W123. Even at that distance, I'd get out of the vehicle practically crippled..........

These are good for 675 miles............but, I'm definitely tired after such a trip.

Thats why I didn't buy a W123. I was looking at a nice one a few years back and was all ready to hand over the money. But I just couldn't get comfortable, no leg room. Not ment for tall people, guess Germans are short.

Bought a LWB W126 and have never looked back, I'll drive the SDL all day no problem.

Same here, I love my W126, and would probably love the LWB version even more (except the lack of a 617......I am "so so" in my opinion of a 603....*puts flame suit on )

Nah.....you don't need a flame suit........the engine is a primmadonna......if you take care of it like a woman......you'll usually be OK.......the 617 can be kicked and beaten like a dog and it won't miss a beat.

Thats very true... I do tend to beat on my 617....and it has withstood 35k miles of me so far.... But I also maintain it above and beyond what it needs....so that helps too.

Maybe I'm built smaller, but I'm pretty comfortable in my 123. I wouldn't want to travel very far in the back seat, but I have plenty of room when I'm driving. The only thing I would really want to improve is the lumbar support in the seats. I have some good sheepskins over the MB Tex and a decent sound system, so I'm pretty happy. I like the 617 because I can pretty much rebuild it on the side of the road with only a screwdriver and some duck tape, if necessary.

Actually, I usually limit myself to about 7-800 miles per day, I prefer to stop around dusk and get going around dawn. I find driving in the daylight much less tiring. I have driven a few 1000+ mile days, but I wouldn't want to do that too often.

Nothing so exciting, I get to spend a week looking at the innards of a nuclear power plant, then I drive back home.
