Refernce Senor (Tach) on 82 300TD

The tach has never worked on my car. Ocassionally, it will spike up and quiver and then back down it goes. I have tried the various fixes for the tach amp, and even replaced it but nothing has changed.

I am servicing my vacuum pump right now and since I have easy access to the sensor, I decided to inspect the reference sensor. It was wobbling on its mount and when I took it off, it looked like it had been smashed. Anybody have a guess as to what the heck happened to my poor little reference sensor?
