So I was given (as in free) a 1979-1980 240 D today!!!

It is a two owner car... the 2nd owner being a neighbor and friend of MANY years... all I have to do is come up with a set of wheels for it. Dark Blue with Palimino Interior. Automatic, has AC, sunroof and euro headlamps. The car needs a radiator and an alternator bracket. Had not been driven or registered in quite a while. (both I can take care of with a lien sale through my friends shop...). Since my only other diesel is my 603 powered SDL, I wanted to know what I should look out for on this car. I know it will run my bio concoction perfectly. I am going to give it some new glow plugs, and give it a nice oil change. The tranny is good and the motor has about 300K on it. I am either going to fix it up, and cherry it out and sell it as a 2 owner car (which it is) or give it possibly to my mom as an around town put put car that is at least safe! But how can I pass up a free mercedes... I mean an automatic 240D is a slug... BUT... its a solid tank. Any input into my new project will be greatly welcomed...

Thanks
Aaron
Pictures will follow shortly...

Great going!
I see why I still haven't run across a cheap little 240. It helps to actually have friends. Whoops.....

BTW, I find this funny, both here on the forum and on ebay.
If you buy a two owner car, when you go to sell it, it is a 3 owner car. If you buy a one owner car, when you resell it it is a 2 owner car, not still a one owner car.
Am I right about this?
(insert justifications below. )

Sounds like it will be an enjoyable car to tidy up and get back out there.

They are REALLY sloooow with the automatic, especially with heavy loads in the back or up steep grades, and overtaking manuevers have to be very carefully planned, so they take their own driving style to be worked out, but as you know they are very sturdy and everlasting cars.

You may decide you want it enough to use it yourself, they can grow on you.
I like those cars a lot, they don't have airbags, ASR, ar ABS but they are solid and handle well and do have disc brakes.

Plus, if you need them, there are LOTs OF truly expert and excellent Mercedes Independent shops in Orange County and in Los Angeles County.

Well if you resell it back to the second owner, it then goes back to being a one owner car. It's "eBay math," just like the kind of math that proves W123s can get 40 mpg.

Smart A$$ Central!!!

I meant going into it... it will only be a two owner car (PRIOR TO ME) and issue of symantics...

I know they are awful slow... and with all the hills around here in so cali... I dont know if it would be something i would keep for myself... Altho I do love collecting cars... lol

I still have my 2000 BMW and my 1986 SDL (it is getting all the other little odd bits fixed in the next few months and a new paint job by summer's end)

I could possibly part the thing out, but it is kind of sad to do that to a car that can be completely sold and driven. I need to get some cheap wheels for it... I will try and find those local. What year wheels will fit it?

I would like to do the same style that is on my SDL...

Thanks
Aaron

Any W123 wheels will fit, either 14-inch steel wheels or alloys would be the correct size. I don't know if SDL wheels have the same off-set as W123s. It's pretty easy to find cheap 14-inch wheels because everyone thinks they need 20-inch wheels now.

Choosing wheels

You can either get the Bundt wheels or the steel ones with the blue color matching hubcaps, either will work on that car. Purely a matter of personal preference, and of course the Bundts will be harder to keep clean of brake dust.

Aroohk, if your friend at the shop is going to charge you anything to do the sale, you can do it yourself for about $15-20. Dmv has a procedure for "private party" lien sales, It worked great for my old 190D. You just contact the lien sale division in Sacramento (916) 657 7617 tell them you have an abandoned vehicle on your land with back owed storage you need to get title to so you can have it removed, they send you a packet with everything you need and off you go.

Can you send me another way to get ahold of you... This might be a way I want to go. I am going to transport the car up to my mechanic and have him give it a once over... I might justend up keeping it if the reg and the insurance are cheap enough. My SDL ended up costing my 38 bucks a year to add to my policy.

Thanks for the input and the offer... I will very much consider it!

Peace
Aaron
