OM617 Engine ID

I just got an engine fron a guy on ebay he thought it was from a 79 300D.
It is turbocharged and a 617 series engine. But before I order parts I need to know if it's a 912, 951, or a 952 engine. How do I tell the difference? Where do I find the numbers on this engine?

Thanks,
Kurt

Look on the block just below the head on the drivers side for a number starting with 617.

A 79 300D would not be a turbo. A 79 300SD would.

if it is turbocharged from a 79 car it can only be 617.950 if it is stock.
If the engines was in a 300D (and Not 300SD) anything goes...

Somewhere between 82 and 85. Depending on what parts you are buying, you may need to determine if it is a station wagon engine or an 85 California engine.

Palangi is right. My list shows the 617.952 as coming from the 1982-85 300D Turbo. It could be from a coupe, sedan, or station wagon. Years 1982-84 are identical as regards engine.

The 1985 model year was available in a "Federal" and a "California" version. The easiest way to tell is by the position of the air cleaner; the California version has the air cleaner up front just behind the right headlights. This is because these engines have a "trap oxidizer" following the exhaust manifold and the turbo sits above that, leaving no room above for the air cleaner. The Federal version is much easier to work on -- less stuff to get in the way. Fuel economy is also better.

The station wagon has a special pump for the rear shocks. Some of that stuff may be on the engine but I'm not familiar with the details.
