1985 300D Fuel Economy and Engine Temp

I helped a friend of mine get a car that he purchased home. I drove the car that he purchased (1984 300D) home. At first I was concerned about the engine temperature because it ran between 85-90c. I discussed this with my friend when we arrived at his house. I expessed my pconcern about the engine temp. He stated that you wnat that temp for fuel economy. My 300D does not get above 80c all year round. Would my fuel economy increase if it were hotter?
Last three fill ups (most recent to later
1. 24.3mpg
2. 26.1mpg
3, 26.8mpg

some think that a little hotter temp will yeild better economy. personally i would change the stat and look to get it to run more like yours temp wise.

the economy looks good.

Generally, the hotter you run the engine, the less heat is lost to the cooling system, and the better the efficiency of the engine.

However, you'll be hard pressed to document a change of 10°C.

We noted a couple of mpg when running gas engines at 245°F. for an extended period.

My 300D tends to run about 95-100 C depending on the ambient temperature. I get around 27 mpg with it. I haven't put enough miles on the 240D to check the economy yet.

Here is an update on my fuel economy... When I replaced the thermostat I had about 1/2 of a tank left. The first half of the tank was just my typical driving between home and work here. After the thermostat I made a trip to Toledo for a soccer game the rest of the driving between home and work. When I filled up that time then fuel economy was 25.8MPG. Since that fill up my driving on the last tank was very similar to the last (including a trip to Toledo). I filled up tonight.....28.1MPG!! FYI both tank fills were with B20.

My car was running much sooler than I realize before changing the stat.....it was more like 6o-65C. Now with the stat changed it runs at 90C.

Whe I first bought the car the fuel economy would typically be a little above 26MPG.

How much this has changed will be better told over a few more tanks, but I am convinced that it did help.

It would seem that 95-100C is too hot - 85ish appears to be the most common number mentioned in these threads.

If you were running in the 60C range, that was definitely too cold. I'm not surprised you are getting improved mileage in the 80C range, that's where these engines are designed to run.

Actually, 60C has 'high' before the stat change. Now I am usually at 82-85C. I am very pleased with the results.
