I usually pump my own fuel and have never had anyone telling me I couldn't. I just sometimes need help getting the pump started depending on how I'm paying depending on the pump design, but as far as the mechanics of the pumping and dealing with the cap, if I'm not doing it, I get out and watch them. That's for all stations.

Of course if they're doing it, I make sure they put the cap on, but it's more to make sure they don't leave a trail of fuel dripping down the side of my car or to make sure they don't slam the bejesus out of the fuel door, bending it so it doesn't line up.

Just for discussion sake...If here in NJ with the 'mandatory' full serve the price is say $3.00/gal. and they change the law to allow both, they'll still charge the $3.00 for self and just raise the price for Full Serve. The price will NOT go down if they change the law, so I'm happy to let them do it in freezing cold and rain while I look at a carefully angled passenger side view mirror to make sure things are done right.

I also hear them put the cap back on in addition to the visual check.
I knew someone would come to the defense of NJ and this stupid law...still I can't see how it benefits the general public by making us wait for an attendant to come and serve us and who screws it up unless you get out and watch them...if I have to watch and confirm they've done everything "my way" then I might as well do it myself and save the time I waited for the dimwit to come out.

I guess the only saving grace is that most of these jokers would be on welfare if not for the "make work" program of creating gas pumping jockeys so instead of the State supporting them all of you drivers do...Like I said, from now on my preference will be not to buy fuel in NJ, but if I have to I will either do it myself or watch them carefully.

The fact is that there has never once been a time I have gone to a full service station that I couldn't have gotten done faster myself with self-serve and pay at the pump. Most of the full serve station still have to run inside to put the credit card through...so more wasted time there too...I guess people in NJ just have given up fighting it but I get mad every time I waste time at one of these "full service" stations.

And how do you prevent them from slamming the fuel door shut exactly? Do you tell them before hand to go gently on it? It would seem that if you just get out and watch them then the damage would be done by the time they closed the door.

Why not just pass a law that makes self serve an option and that the stations still MUST provide full service at the same price as self service for anyone who actually wants to sit on their butts and waste time? It would seem that would address all the issues here, unless there is anyone left who actually believes there is a safety issues surrounding self-service?

Has anybody ever gone to the website urbandictionary dot com?
look up the slang definition for 'take the jersey turnpike'
don't do it if you're at work however

and Brian, I'm going to take your route next time I drive to the city to see the fam
Not that the turnpike is unpleasant, twas a pleasant drive last time I did it
was about $30 poorer from the tolls though

Living in NJ, I am not a big fan of the full-service requirement. But so far, all has been well. I look that the attendants replace the cap and check in the mirror that the fuel tank door is closed - just a habit now. In general, only a moron would close a fuel door without putting the cap on, unless they didn't bother looking down or if they are having a really bad day...

Nonetheless, I didn't mind paying 2.69 for diesel in NJ today... Almost back to what it was before the price hike

There's no reason to hate the whole state for the full service fueling requirement... Just hate the requirement, if you must... lol

Don't forget about OR, the other state with the no-pump silliness.

Here's another reason to get rid of it - I grew up in NJ, and the first time I needed gas out of state I couldn't figure out how to do it! I had to apporoach the guy next to me. "Um, I'm from New Jersey..." I said, and he helped me out.

Yes, my sister and brother in law also from NJ have no idea how to pump gas. Teach a man to fish means nothing in NJ, they just want to give you the fish and hope you never leave the state.

Seriously, with 48 states using self-serve it does no resident any favors by banning it in NJ or OR.

Usually I pump my own fuel in NJ (except on the Turnpike). Those ****** are slow... by the time they get to me, I filled up half of the tank already. The attendant didn't mind that I pumped on my own. A few of them was actually happy because they don't have to walk across their gas station to pump diesel for one customer while there was like 10 gas customer.

On a similar "token",
If we eliminate the tolls, that will put the tollworkers out of a job.

I accept that the full service law in NJ is stupid. I would be very pleased if they passed a law that said self and full serve must be the same price, but I'm not foolish enough to expect that if that law were passed, that all fuel prices in NJ wouldn't have a mysterious, unchallenged, and forever sustained jump in price of 5% or more.

Oh, it's not our fault. Market sets the price
