Am I crazy?
A girl I've known for years owns a 79 240D. manual everything cept tranny.. its been sitting for 3 years in her driveway.. its been vandalized but the interior is immaculate down to the original first aid kit sticker. its a tobbaco color. the engine hasnt been started in 3 years. i think.. the bad thing.. its got cancer.. bad.. the rockers, and main beams underneath are just shot. and other spots..
here is what i want to do and so does she she loves the mercede's diesels.. ive got a buddy with a W123 with a good body bad engine and tranny. should we buy the 300D off him and swap everything thats good from her 240D including manual AC and the lot to the rust free shell? |

Provided you have a place to do the work, the time to do it, and the skills, or at least the willingness to learn them, yes you should do it.
I learned a great deal about cars from a project car I had in my late teens and early twenties. It wasnt' a Benz, though. I bought a '63 Dodge Dart with no engine or trans and swapped in a '79 360 V8 with a '73 A904 Torqeflite transmission. It took me several years and the help of a few friends to get it all to work together, but I had a great time working on that car.

I'd say go for it. I'm doing the same with my '85s. I found a good body with a seized motor for the good motor in my car that was hit in the rear, badly. The good body has a trashed interior but the interior on the rear-ended car is absolutely gorgeous. The good motor needs a little work so I'm going to pull it out soon, I hope, and try to get it purring nicely before school. Its been a lot of fun so far and I don't even have the motors out yet.

Do it. I am in the midst of an entire interior replacement and still have some rust to care for as well as a bit of mechanical work. If you have the time give it a try.

Boardmonger,
Your picture is just like the Sunday paper section for kids. Pick the car that doesn't belong........ Ken300D

You're wondering whether you should endeavor to do some serious car work and we're the people you ask if you should do it or not? Lol, it sounds like the decision is already 90% made!
Good luck!

I'll bet that 300D still has a decent motor and tranny. Probably just the rear-end is bad.
