Never made a 4 cylinder turbo. Only the 5 and 6 cyl engines were ever factory turbo.

Have seen a couple, really rare on ebay - both aftermarket conversions and factory setups (series 123.183, and engine type OM616.916) from about 1982/83 I think. And didnt the later body style 190d include a factory turbo 4cyl version?

Humm, any deatils? Never seen/heard of one. AFAIK a factory turbo'd OM616 does not exist from MB in a W115 or W123.
EDIT: Ah, I see you are thinking of a 240TD. Those were not turbo. TD does not mean "Turbo Diesel", it stands for "Touring Diesel"

The 87 190D 2.5Turbo was an I-5 engine.

Yes I know the difference. Neighbor of mine in Louisville has a normally asphixiated 240TD 4-spd. Helluva fine wagon, tried to talk him out of it.

Meanwhile here's an aftermarket kit version that doesnt look trustworthy: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1983-Mercedes-Benz-240D-Turbo-Diesel_W0QQitemZ4649886853QQihZ002QQcategoryZ6329QQcmdZViewItem

Seen another that was deffinitely stone stock 240D turbo from the factory, but the listing has expired for viewing. Must have been a Euro thing, short production run. Personally am not real crazy about turbo-charged engines. Strikes me they all deliver the same top-end speed, turbo or not 85mph is 85mph, the only difference being boost in acceleration for climbing hills. Just my preference, but I'd rather drive a non-turbo 240D 4-spd then an automatic turbocharged 300. Now show me a 5-spd turbo 300D and that would be something else.

i have never heard of a factory 616 turbo in a car. if one existed i would want it if it was a good car. the turbos dont seem to cause much trouble except that the head gaskets tend to start leaking around 275 to 300k on the 617 turbo. so if the 240 turbo carried a lower gear than the 617 i would expect it to need one proportionately earlier.

they apparently offered a 240 turbo in the gwagen. gurkha has one. he visits this site but havent heard from him for a few months.

From what I have read, the Indians have licensed the 616 design from MB and are producing in their country for domestic use. They have updated the design (or used features from the 617) to make it a turbo.

If built to German manufacturing tolerances, that would be a great diesel engine for something like a truck or even a W123. Unfortunately it probably could not pass emissions here.

What you are seeing is probably an aftermarket turbo kit. Highly inadvisable since the engine is not "beefed up" to support it like the 617.
