1981 240D injector pump leak HELP!!!
I am approx 75 miles from home, IP has a leak from around the bottom of the hand pump. I can not spend the time to search for this problem.
As is, can I drive home. Leak must not be too bad, MPG a little low at 29 MPG, but I can smell the raw fuel when I get out of the car. Smell nothing in the car. bob 1981 240D 176,000 miles |
Most likely you will make it home.
Just a tiny amount of diesel can make a strong smell. For example, those injector return lines can leak just enough to dampen the braid and you can smell that pretty strongly when you open the hood. Ken300D |
no, it is not the return lines, changed them over a month ago. I saw fuel leaking from the bottom of the hand pump, after I turned off the engine.
later when returning a large puddle of fuel. so glad i have AAA gold , they will haul me anywhere within 100 miles. bob |
Cool yer jets bob and stop panicking...... lesser known secret (as explained in the owners manual?) is the IP primer pump knob pushes down and screws clockwise to tighten up and stop leaking. Meanwhile never worry about explosive flamability of diesel fuel, can put a cigarette out in a puddle of it without the fuel catching fire.

already tried turning the round pump knob. leak is on the bottom.
thanks for the advice that diesel is not like gas. bob |
Sounds like it is time for a new primer pump.

thanks to everyone who took a few minutes to get me straight.
I am now home. I called the local MB dealer, and for 34.00 I can get a new hand pump. I guess this will give me something to do tomorrow night. would rather mess with the MB, then cut grass !!! bob 1981 240d |
Ixnay Dealertay - you can find a better deal right here by clicking on "Buy Parts" if you can wait for delivery. They usually ship same day as order received (or next day if you order late) and its a matter of how far you are from the closest distribution center as to how long it takes to arrive.
You want to make sure you get the "new design" primer pump and not the original design. The new design has nothing to unscrew and has a metal casie. Search the forum on "primer pump" for lots of info. Ken300D |
