300D Fader Problem - No Sound Front Speakers
I did a search and all I could come up with were people who had problems with the rear speakers not working, but I have the opposite problem. What should I be checking in order to locate the problem? I'd like to keep the stock radio, as I don't need a cd player. The car is an 87 300D.

If you have a OHM meter you can test the fader to see if resistance changes
when checking between middle contacts and either end. In my experience they have oxidized and a little rolling forward and back cleans it out. Have never had one go bad. And if you do have sound out of the back speakers, then it is fine out of the stereo. The only other thought is the connections at the speakers. Hard to believe they would both be bad.

I took the fader apart today and gave it a good cleaning, but still no sound. I did check the resistance, and there was between the back 2 terminals on either side, but no resistance between any other combo of terminals. What does that mean?

When I replaced my head unit and eliminated the fader - the only thing that worked for me was to use a 'Toner'. Telephone and Network people use these to trace wires. Trust me when I tell you that both the front and rear set do NOT connect directly to the fader. I cannot remember exactly what I found - but the 'toner' solved all my problems. Basically - when you have the right wires connected to the 'toner' - you will hear a tone out of the speaker.
Sorry I could not solve the problem - but maybe I could direct you towards another path. Stephen

Does anybody by any chance have a schematic of the speaker wires for an 87 300D? I tried following the wires as far as I could, and didn't see any obvious problems. Also, how do you remove the front speakers? I'd like to pop them out to make sure they aren't blown or something.
