Glow Plug Light

I can't seem to get my 1979 240D to start. The glow plug light went out and now it won't start. I changed the glows plugs and checked the fuses and it still won't start and the glow plug light doesn't work. Any other sugestions?

That is a series system. Did you check the flat fuse on the fire wall? It may be the glow relay under the dash. Turn the key on and check for 12 volts at the plug near the fire wall.

There is also a strip fuse under the cover in the glow module under the hood, located @ front left inside fender. Those modules are known for dying as well. It is what processes the temp sensor readings to time the glow plug power and light. Also I have noticed (in my car) that if one of those temp sensors becomes unplugged the glow plugs appear to not work (no glow light), might check that too. The temp sensors are located in reducer bushings in the head freeze plug holes just above the IP, between the glow plugs. Some have only one, others have two.

Totally different system. Please don't confuse the guy.

akinley,

We have to know which GP system is in your car.

Do you have a "gorilla" knob that U pull to engage the GP and starter or are the GP automatic with the key switch?

Is there a "salt shaker" in the dash that glows red when the GP get hot?

Have U checked the resistance from each GP to ground (with the key off)?

Are there resistance wires between the GP?

Version 1: Pull knob and glow indicator on dash. Looks like salt shaker. Series circuit.

Version 2:Glow indicator is light bulb in instrument cluster. Metal box glow relay under dash. Series system.

Version 3: Plastic box glow relay mounted on left inner fender well. Has 50A or 80A flat fuse depending on model. Has glow time temp sensor in cyl head. Parallel circuit.

Version 4: Plastic glow relay box mounted on left inner fender well Has 50A or 80A flat fuse depending on model. Has no temp sensor in cyl head. Sensor is in black plastic glow relay. Parallel circuit.

This car should be Version 2 unless it has been converted to the large plug parallel after market system.

It ended up being a blown fuse (the one attached to the firewall). Thanks for everyone's help. I feel like an idiot. The fuse should have been the first thing i checked. Live and learn.
