Rusty A/C lines, need a new compressor?

If there is rust on the inside of the A/C lines do I definately need a new compressor? The A/C wasn't working when I got the car (300SDL).

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

Well, rust on the insides means the system has been open to the air for an extended time or someone didnt vaccum the system prior to its last recharge. In either case the compressor could be ok. Can you spin it? ANd I dont mean the clutch, I mean the compressor shaft. If you can spin it how does it sound?

I have decided to shotgun my '87 300D AC.
I discovered rust in my lines too. I figure its not worth putting a new compressor in and having it ruined later when the stuff comes off. Consensus was to replace the 2 main lines, expansion valve/evaporator, condensor and of course dryer

How much did all that cost?

I'll have to give it a spin tonight and see.

Dumb question

How do I get the clutch to engage so I can spin the shaft? The vehicle is inoperable right now and the CCU is gone (physically).

You don't engage the clutch.

The "fingers" on the front (forward of the belt) are attached to the shaft. Attempt to turn these by hand.

Exactly like Matt said. The clutch spins around the compressor shaft until 12v is applied. You want to turn the shaft by hand and see what you can feel and hear. In my 240D that sucker was locked up nice. When I did the leak check, sure enough, blowing tons of air right out of the compressor housing. So, mine is grenaded but Im hoping you fare better! When I rebuilt the AC system on my old 300D the compressor sounded like crap on a hand spin but since I could hear the suction side still sucking I gave it a shot. After the system was rebuilt I fired it up and it sounded real bad. Like gravel in a can. As soon as the oil started circulating it quieted right down and worked til I sold the car.
