Newbies first post 0n 70 220D
 

I have a 70 220D with a 240D engine. I am the 2d owner and the car is in very good condition for its age. The lady who had it kept the maintance up and had the shop tickets going all the way back to when the car was new. I do have a few problems that I will post later. Just would like to know if there are any other benz of that era left. I have not seen any posts going back that far. One other thing I am somewhat mechanically challenged so don't feel like you are talking down to me when giving an answer I will not be insulted.

Fire away re: questions. i don't have one that old, mine is a 1981 300SD. The girlfriend finds the early '70s 115 diesels very appealing so one may join our stable sometime soon. They're fun old cars, the pull-knob glow plug setup really lets you know you're in a diesel- as opposed to the near-gasser feel of my big W126.

I have a W115 300D. The W115/W114 are an excellent chassis, regardless of the rust issues. Welcome aboard, and feel free to ask any questions. We have a lot of diesel gurus on here ALWAYS willing to help. Mines a 76 BTW

I still have a 220D and a 240D but alas I haven't driven them for many years. I got spoiled by the Turbo engines.

Since I drove and repaired both for many miles and years, I can probably help U with repairs. I might also have some hard to find parts U might need.

thanks P.E.H. I may take you up on that offer. Did you see my post on the 240D IP problem? If you got any ideas on that one I would like to hear them. Basicly I add oil and it ends up on the floor. Pump is working fine but I am afraid it might burn up at any time.

Check to see that the oil cannister isn't cracked, that has been known to happen when someone overtightened the center bolt.
Another problem is when one stacks another O-ring on the old one, basically using two O rings at the filter can, one Oring blows out and allows oil to pour out on the ground.

The IP will overflow when too much oil is put in from an overflow pipe on the engine side. There is no dipstick so U just add oil until it runs out.

So U have nothing to worry about.Your pump is full of oil.

Thanks, I just found that pipe and was talking about it on another thread as you were answering me. I though it might be an air intake for the pump or it was blowing my oil out of it. In any event I still don't see why it did not come out the check screw when I went to check it, if it had all this would not have been necessary but thanks again.

U don't have to add oil to the IP very often. And when U do, its only a small amount, maybe an ounce or less every 10,000 miles. If it takes more than that, there must be a leak and it should be repaired so it doesns't run dry.
