shimmy/slow 'bounce' at lower speeds

hey all,
learning more and more about auto DIY as this car needs more and more repairs...

1980 300CD w/ 267k miles haveing a noticable 'shimmy' type vibration at between 20 and 30 mph. i believe it is in direct relation to the right rear wheel because the tire has worn almost completely FLAT in the two weeks since this started. however i am not sure...

i got all tires aligned back in march to fix an unhelthily fast wear on the left front tire but i think this is unrelated to any sort of alignment issue.

i have been told to check into tie rods, control arms and ball joints by those who know little to some about MB in this era. need to know:
* what is wrong
* if its a DIY job, and, if not-
* how much to expect to pay for parts and labor

if at all possible i'd love to fix this myself, i have little more than $200 and am in the classic college scenario of paycheck to paycheck living. thanks in advance for all of the help!

-billy

First thing I'd do is rotate the wheels and see if the problem follows from one side to another.

My car tires got out of round and did something similar.
It is easy to check, or ask a tire store to check them.

Lift the car, set a straight edge like a yardstick on a box across the tread
of the tire and spin by hand, if it moves closer and further away the tire is not round.

It could easily be any number of things, but this is one that is often overlooked.
You can balance it, and align it, but if it is not round it will still be miserable.

Look at the tire tread as you spin the wheel. I had a car do that, and it turned out to be the beginnings of tread separation.

My experience is that ~30MPH shakes are caused by out of round tires. Jack up the car and spin the tire by hand. If you can see that it's not round, then it's bad enough to cause your symptoms. From memory, less than 1mm of runout is acceptable, 1mm is marginal, and anything over 1mm will cause very noticable shimmy/shaking. BTDT with my one and only set of Kuhmos.
