Bleeding problem?

1st post here so please bear /w me.
noticed a couple of 190d owners online but this is open for any diesel guru.
having a problem starting my 190d /84 2.2.
car sat for some time, replaced fuel, glow plugs, new batt.checked fuel shut-off,
cannot seem to get fuel to pump outta IP.
read "many" older posts on the subject though they were not 190 specific
I tryed many of the sugestions.
being that the IP is self asperating? bleeding? not sure how to tell if fuel is circulating inside pump.
any thoughts?
thanks mark

How long did you crank the starter? Did you fill the filter with diesel or ATF? No primer pump on the 601 as far as I know. They use the term 'self venting' for this and I believe the 602/03 engines. Others with more knowledge will hopefully chime in. Good luck.

There is no hand primer pump on your car. The fuel pump is commonly called the primer pump, but it is designed to be crank bled.

Stupid design in my opinion, but I guess Mercedes though othewise.

Getting good at removing glow plugs.
took them out so engine would spin like a hooker on payday in a minning town.
lots of fuel? stuff coming out onf glow plug holes.
still no start. removed glow plugs again, but this time disconnected
all lines at IP,expecting shower of fuel, instead little trips coming out of each
delivery valve.
is that norm, I em thinking it should be more of a blast or atleast a good squrirt.
I know this subject to some has been over bashed, I have read a lot of the
discussions on the subject am I missing something??

thanks Mark

19D,

Remove the output (return line) from the IP and see if fuel comes out when U crank the engine. Fuel should come out if IP is getting fuel.

Note, don't remove the line at the IP, remove at the opposite end. That way U won't disturb the pressure valve in the IP.

Report what happens.

I disconected the return from the IP just as you said.
the oposite end of it goes into filter housing then returns to tank[fuel]
so I worked the return line going into tank, there is a steady stream of fuel coming out when turnning over engine.

thanks Mark

19D,

We know the IP is getting fuel. I thought there should be a squirt out of the IP when the IP to injector lines are removed. My 617 engine squirted enough fuel to hit the hood.

I'm not that familiar with the 601 engine. Is it similar to a 603?

603

I think the 603 is similar to the 601 as the 616 is to 617. If your getting fuel from the return lines and the prechambers it sounds like you have one of the 3 things needed for ignition. The other parts are compression and heat (glow plugs). I can't remember if there is a fuse strip for the glow plugs on the firewall like my 240D but that would be a good place to check. Those glow plugs should be in parallel so if one is bad the other 3 should function. Do you get a glow plug light on the dash panel? Can you hear the relay for the glow plugs? Plenty of good info in the archives for glow plug troubleshooting.
I'm not a guru, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn last night...

Have new glow plugs, and borrowed the GP relay from a sister car that runs fine.
the original relay had a burnt conntact inside, also the reed fuse was shot, the PO
didn't have a bulb in dash for GPs so tryed starting w/out waiting for plugs to cycle. I can only quess.
I can only suspect at this time that the preasure valves on top of IP are stickin/clogged.>??
but for all 4 to not squrit fuel seems odd, gonna try and find a socket to day
or rigg something.
Iem going in.............

thanks again Mark

If you're thinking about "going into" the IP, I would be very careful. Do you have a manual? They are fairly expensive to replace.

Take m out, clean em.
spin the engine w/out them in, if no fuel squirts at that point
its a sure bet theres somethin sinister goin on in side that IP.
theres an exploded view of them[preasure valves] in the shop man.
does'nt look like rocket science, will procede with caution though.
Have to wait for socket, maybe fri.

I don't know if it's rocket science, but my car is currently in a very experienced benz shop with a leak in the IP and they will not go any deeper than replacing the o-rings, they send them out to a Bosch shop if they need more work than that. BTW, the IP (for my 300D) lists for about $1600, and you can get a rebuild for $800 and change. I would proceed with caution.
