What about WVO/SVO, can veggy fuel harm the trap-ox?

If WVO and SVO don't atomize properly through the injectors it will cause more soot which is the main thing that plugs these things up. If you are going to run WVO or SVO you had better pre heat it. Soy bean oil is supposed to actually reduce soot, so that would be a good thing to run. There might be other things in the WVO that could harm the oxidation cat because it is a catalyst. The trap ox wouldn't be sensitive to this because it works on heat and oxygen alone. I don't know what the catalyst is made of so I don't know what can harm it.

There are several reports on the emissions of diesels running different types of vegtable oils. Just remember soot is the enemy of your trap ox/oxidation cat and choose accordingly.

MBUSA still covers trap oxidizer

I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday. They did honor the trap oxidizer campaign. It was a pain to go through MBUSA. I finally got help from someone I know whithin the dealership and did an extensive research and got an approval to do warranty work on the car.

I still had to pay $150 for miscellaneous items since the car needed more work than the trap ox anyway. Still, they replaced the trap and it did drive 110% better than when I brought it in. It took them 5 days to work on the car.

The part they installed is 126 490 34 14 (Catalyst) along with misc. tubes, gaskets and screws.

Also, according to the service writer, my car has had the trap service done twice already.

Easy to tell if your car has the newer catalytic converter mod. It has a shiny sheet-metal cover whereas the original "trap oxidizer" is rusty cast iron. You can find a post w/ photos. I doubt the converter robs much power or mileage. It has a large surface area and blows thru easily. The one on my 85 CA 300D looked pristine (bright white ceramic).

I now have a 1982 engine in that car, with the turbo, manifolds, and exhaust down-pipe that came with it. I kept the frame-mounted air cleaner, using a silicone elbow to the turbo inlet (see post). No emissions inspections for my diesels in CA. I did keep the CA stuff in case I ever have to go back, though I'm eyeing that turbo to try on my slant six Dart.

You should ditch the trap cat if for no other reason than to protect your turbo. When I opened mine to harvest the flanges to make a test pipe, I found that the ceramic had broken apart. Looking further I found pieces lodged in the turbo. Fortunately they never made it to the turbine.

After installing the pipe on my bro's car, he swears it has more pep than before. It could be psychological, but who knows?. If nothing else, the car is several pounds lighter, and that might be a factor....Rich

Well I don`t know if it is psychological or not, but our 85 Kali Kar was sure a dog when we were Colorado in the Vail area, we stayed at keystone for the weekend. The elevation is 9 - 10K ft. this thing had no OOMPH, I think a 240D could have out ran her.

I talked to my MB mechanic, and he said to change it like a 83 300D is. The Federal set up. We swapped in the Fed manifolds, Down pipe, Turbo, Turbo Oil supply line and Air Filter Housing.

The next summer we were back up there, and I thought I was in a Corvette. the difference is amazing.

I had the Trap replaced by MB right after we bought the 85 under their warranty program. so there were not all that many miles on it when we were in Colorado.

If I had to do it again, I would still go the Fed route, and use the 78 or 79 300SD manifolds w/o the EGR. A bit more expensive.

Test Pipe would be the cheaper way to go.

Original set up, exhaust goes through the Trap oxidizer ( Test Pipe) then through the Turbo.

Fed Set up, Exhaust leaves manifold and goes straight to The turbo, nothing to slow down or cool off the exhaust flow to the Turbo. This is more efficient than routing it around before getting to the turbo.

The Federal Down Pipe is cheaper than the Kali Pipe, if it is still available.
The kali Air Filter element is quite a bit more expensive than the Fed version. Something like $18 vs $50.

Getting rid of the Trap, then the Fed Starter is quite a bit cheaper than the Kali one.

For a test Pipe, then ROLLGUY is your man.
