Stupid question...

I've recently replaced both fuel filters with good results (no leaks).

Last night I replaced my leaky old-style fuel primer pump with the new style one. When I re-assembled the fuel lines I noticed a lot of air in the clear fuel filter, so I cracked open the large bolt on top of the spin-on filter, gave it a few pump and when some fuel came out I re-tightened the large bolt, cleaned everthing out, re-started the car to make sure it's all good and called it the night...

This morning after driving to work I noticed diesel smell from under the hood, so I checked it out and sure enough I've got a fuel leak from under the spin-on filter (leaking towards the engine)... I remember that I had tightened it pretty good last night so tightening it even more is probably not an option now, but I also recall something else...

When I replaced my fuel filter it came with a new "O-ring"... upon removal of the old filter I didn't see the old o-ring so after scratchin my head I stuffed it on the shaft under the spin-on housing and then screwed the new filter onto the shaft. Now I wonder if I had placed that new O-ring in the wrong place?!

Can someone please clarify the proper location of the O-ring, and copper crush-washer on a spin-on filter?! One of them is the reason for my new fuel leak...

I'm not sure where you are describing "under the spin-on filter". Is it leaking at the bolt head or the mating gasket for the filter?

Sometimes it is a little hard to tell. If it is just seeping, it is probably the bolt head area and there may be a little burr causing you grief. If fuel appears to have sprayed on the surrounding area, then the mating gasket area is suspect.

Is the filter gasket not sealing against the mounting?

Looks like it's leaking from top of the bolt head area (seeping around the large bolt) - top of the spin-on filter is wet (wasn't there before) and i see it spilling onto the engine where the fuel filter housing is connecting to engine block - lots of wetness there...

Where does the crush washer go and were does the o-ring go on these spin-ons?

the copper ring

goes between the head of the bolt and the top of the spin on housing. the o ring goes on the shaft of the bolt, there is a groove that it resides in.

Sounds as if it is leaking around the crush washer. All it takes is a little metal burr and problems spring up. A little emory cloth usually takes care of it. If you need a new crush washer, most parts places carry them but you may need to tell them to look in the brake section or they tend to give you a blank stare.

There are two different set-ups, depending on the year. The older ones have the o-ring and copper washer. The later ones have 2 o-rings, which are different sizes. This always trips up the parts guys.
