This is what a 617 looks like with NO blow-by (video)

Well I just had to do a little video on this '84 300D. This is the car I installed the Bosio nozzles in a while back.

This is the only 617 I have ever seen with NO blow-by! Runs like a scortched dog. Funny thing is the coupe in the other video has some minor blow-by but will out gun the '84 off the line.

I have some fun plans for this car. Propane injection and a few other little tricks for the track. Apart from opening the hood, the car will look and sound completely like a stock unit. Toying with the idea of running properly heated WVO or maybe just bio diesel. Going to have some custom billet aluminum flex disc made for the drive line as this car will see some drag track time.

I am trying to get others aware of the advantages of diesels and hope that spanking some unsuspectin ricers, will earn some "diesel" respect.

Anyway scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to view the video titled What a Mercedes 617 diesel looks like with NO Blow-by (Video)

Yes someone stole(borrowed) the fan shroud. I had a kind fellow I met at the local junk yard find one for me, I just have to go pick it up.

Why doesn't the cam toss oil all over the valve cover on that engine? Mine would be covered in oil in about 15 seconds if I tried that.

Amazing on the blowby.........

I have no oil pressure.......just kidding.

The blow-by pressure forces the oil out the cap hole. Remember the oiling pipe is squirting the oil down on the cam, so it should never spew out the hole, unless you have some blow-by helping it out.

Now on many gas Jap cars the oil WILL spray out even with no blow-by, but I guess that is due to how the oil is angled to the rotating cam lobes etc.

Our '83 SD looks like that with the cap off, it has 0 blowby too, and it has 272k on it....we have no idea if the engine was ever rebuilt, but we don't think it was. We do know it was a 90% freeway miles car when we got it with 247k on it, the previous owner was a sales rep, and drove it endlessly on the freeway. I should make a video of it's lack of blowby. Mine on the other hand, has plen-ty o' blowby always has, but its the same now at 242k as it was at 207k when I got it...and its faster off the line than the '83, and burns no oil. I don't get it. Both of ours also start down to -10F w/out a block heater just fine. Very strange indeed.

I can't really tell much from the video. I believe you that there is no vapor, though. Did you do any other "tests" on this engine like plugging the breather hole? How long did it last? What does the cap do when you leave it on loose? Nothing?

Aren't these engines supposed to have blowby anyway? I thought the mercedes engineers called it Positive Crankcase Ventilation. And they have an oil seperator in the air cleaner too.

Besides, blowby doesn't seem to have an accurate way to measure it, and more importantly, blowby doesn't seem to correlate with any other engine condition. You see people with no blowby and bad compression, lots of blowby and great compression, and every other combination in between. In and of itself it doesn't seem to matter.

In the interest of full discolsure, my 84 300D has moderate blowby.

Thanks to DG for putting up the video (and all the pictorials you do also).

PCV system is on a gas engine using the naturally occuring vacuum to keep blow-by out of the crankcase. Not so on a diesel. The 617 is a blow-by monster yet the 603 rarely is seen with a lot of blow-by.

Earlier gas cars used what is called a road draft tube to vent the crankcase gasses out, but the EPA stopped that in 1965.

Doing the finger over the tube test would do nothing since nothing is coming out. Only works to give a mild indication of the severity of the blow-by.

Scientifically I am sure all cars including this one has some blow-by, but it is so minimal you can't see it.

I just thought others would like to see what these engines use to be like.....

The lack of blow-by was impressive, but the 300CD really suprised me. I had no idea these cars could accelerate like that. My 300 is no slouch, but I dont think it could move like the coupe. From the video, it looks like you had a big rush of power around 3600 RPM, or 35 MPH.

My 617 with about 230k well maintained miles chugs like a steam train. Go figure.

I have seen several 603's and 606's with zero blow by. My favorite was a 606 with well over 300k on it that would do that.

On the 603's their is a cam lob right below the oil cap, it tends to throw drops of oil up as it spins making a bit of a mess on my polished cover.

Yes the car will push you back in the seat. I think the rush of power came while I was still on fairly flat ground. I let off the gas 2 times because I was going down the hill and wanted to power up the other side.

It's hard to time a WMV video on a mac. What was the 0-60 time for that CD? I've got mine down to 13.5 seconds.

Just saw the 300CD video, 0-60 looks within spec.

Their are so many poorly mainted, tired examples running around that people forget what these cars are supposed to run like when in tune.

There is no reason that anyones 617 can't pull to 60 in the 12-13 second range.
