Question about manual shifting an auto 300d.

I've been trying to troubleshoot my 1978 300d tranny for some time now. I used to think that 4th gear and R were done on that car. When I put it in D and count the shifts it will only shift two times, so basically what I thought was it was going from 1st to 3rd gear only. Well today I was messing around and put the car in L, which is first gear. I noticed that it revved up much faster when in that gear, a gear I've never felt before. So I then proceed to bump it up to S or second gear, it shifts. I then put it in D and it shifts again and then once in D it then shifted into overdrive. So manually, the car will shift a total of 3 times vs. 2 times when in D.

My question is does the car always start in second when in D?

I also have no R so I'm trying to figure out why that's out too.
