How much did you lower it and how did you correct the wheel camber from lowering?

Nice rig!! What did you do for the later style glow plug timing? I have a complete 83 donor 300D and a nice shape baby blue 77 240Automatic. I am thinking of staying with the Automatic as the one in the 300 is a MBZ rebuild and in tight shape.

well I bought it from an 18 year old who had his brother lower it for him by "heating the springs"he said.my self I dont know if I would have lowered it as low.the head lights were his mod also I can ask him where he got them and tell you that.they have small purple bulbs inside also wich I rigged to a seprate toggle he had them NO.about the glo plugs, I have the relay inside the newer style glow plug box pinched on with a aligator clip (I had one handy )I'm still trying to figure out a permenant method though.but you really should click on the pic and chegk the rest of the shots .Oh yeah the GP timer on the 77 seems to be under the dash thats why the aligator clip method works for now.

You can use the stock relay. Just run the main wire (The one that went to the series glowplugs head) to the rear glowplug and run jumper wires to the other 4 glowplugs.

Something like this kit does.

so you're saying after the fuse ,run jumper wires straight to the 5 gp wires from the lead wire?that does make sence, thanks I'll try that.

A really unique work in progress and test mule!!!

Now that iscertainly "one of a kind"- I have never seen one lowered but with painted hubcaps and clear front corners!! I hope you aren't forced to put front license plates on it by the DEQ

That is a unique and pleasant upholstery treatment too.

The 4 speed with a turbo must involve a learning curve in knowing when to shift. How much extra hp do you think you get over the non turbo version with this? I think the standard HP with the stick 240 is about 68-77, and these cars are not too light either.

H and R, Eibach are the usual methods of lowering the cars, never actually heard of one done this way? Do you think there is any possibility the integrity of the springs was compromised?

Was there any tire scrub, or change in rear tire camber that you have noticed so far?

This is an interesting project to see, most 240 W123 cars aren't modified much, but every extra hp helps I'm sure.

I have always liked the 4 speed on the 240, it's not notchy at all and really works very well with the motor. It's too bad it wasn't available with the other models in USA, although the automatic transmission shifts well and is pretty bulletproof

Jim

well the engine that i have installed is from a 1983 300D turbo as is the differential.it does seem kind of slow off the line though.what was that somebody said about the 1985's having 2.88's?those gears are in between the 77, 240D, and the 83, 300D ratios?

Pretty much it. You only need one wire to each + post on the GP heads. The post-fuse wire from the GP relay goes to the #5 gp and jumper wires go between it and the rest. NO ground strap. Just make sure the fuse is rated for 80 amps.

Stock 240D 3.69 ratio. It's good around town, but it's pretty low for the highway.

I have access to a 85 300dt rear end and I am wondering if that will give me more off the line plus still give me good freeway performance?

The diff you need depends on what kind of driving you do most. I do alot of city driving, so the 3.69 is just the ticket for me.

The 85 is probably a 2.88. You will *loose* off the line performance with a higher gear ratio but you will run better on the highway.

If you use a diff from a W123, be sure to get the speedo from that same car as well to keep your speeds accurate.
