Probably 1-2K. If it went on e-bay maybe a little more.
That's a nice car. I like the W123 chassis a little better for maintenance. But that older chassis is a very good solid ride as well. Little bigger and heavier.
On a car that old chances are you might have to work on the heating and cooling systems. That car is essentially the same as a 450SE but with the 617 engine. It was a PITA to work on behind the dash.

I'd say 2K-ish if NO rust. BTW there is no such thing as a grey-market W116 300SD. They were all US-market only. It may have been a European delivery as in someone bought it here , drove it around there, and had it shipped back here, all under the auspices of MBZ.

Thats what I was thinking too, especially with the larger bumpers.

Well, I might pay more than 2k for it from what you described. It looks pretty good to me. And I like the older style a lot. If 160k is for real then that is low milage. Of course, when you go to make your offer you can tell them you talked it over with the people at mercedesshop and they told you it wasn't worth more than $2000 max.

One owner car w/service records? And if its got manual sunroof, windows and manual heat controls then add another $500....... plus manual transmisison would make it a $3000+ car easily. Fabric seats are highly desirable in my book. At $2000 it would probly be a square deal/bargain even if its got all the automatic/electric junk.

Is it really true the w116 300SD was available for USA export only? Did they have n/a 116 300D's available in Europe? Putting limitations on MB variations coming out of Stuttgart always seems questionable to me. I once owned a 1977 w116 280SEL equipped with 4-spd tranny, manual heat controls, fabric seats and (strangely) wiper motors and blades to clean the headlights.

Sell it in the Pacific Northwest and you could get $3000 for it I would say. The prices vary between areas.

300SD are strictly US spex only. Most european mercedes fans don't even know that the W116 had a diesel model.
There is no such thing as a non-electronic, no-sunroof, cloth seat W116 300SD from factory. they all have the Chrysler ACCII and were made during the black years of the German steel worker strike (poor quality steel, prone to rust). Therefore the only price consideration will be miles, rust and AC servo working or not.
Base price $2000. knock 700 buck if AC servo broken. if the car as apparent rust further 500 buck. A good running part car should set you back 800-1200 bucks not more.

I always hear that the steel strike make cars of that vintage prone to rust, however I have not really noticed a trend on any cars I have looked at.

Then you have not looked at enough W116's! Every single one I see has rust issues, and that is here in Texas....
I sure do like the look of them though, and hear the drive better than the 123's.
In my opinion, few other models benefit more from Euro lights that the W116. Those stock headlights add very little to a really nice look.

Thanks for the assessment. Meanwhile in the olden days MB used to assemble cars per customer specs with whatever options they wanted. Waiting list was generally 18months - 2 yrs. If the original owner purchased this car in Germany then he must have requested *fabric seats*. I wonder if he asked for a manual sunroof too. And knowing MB, they'd even provide a manual tranny if an overseas customer asked for it.

The steel workers strike ended in '79 so depending on the build date this amazing 116 could have Ruhr Valley sheet-metal instead of Italian or Russian. And are you saying that ALL 116's were equiped with electric sunroofs and stuck with the Chryzler ACC?

Have seen plenty of 450's with no sunroof at all. The only 116 equipped with manual heat that I've ever seen was my 1977 280SEL 4-spd, grey market import smuggled into Miami.

Hey THETRON - you started this conversation. How is this amazing excellent 300SD equiped..... manual heat and manual slider roof maybe? And if by any chance thats a rare 4-spd 116 then I'd dump my 240D's and be dying to take a shot at owning and driving it for the next 20 yrs myself.

.......car is startin to look better'n better just talkin about it - $2700 says me for this ONE owner low-mileage 116 w/service records custom ordered from Germany with fabric seats.

(edit: unless of course its got no sunroof and needs work on the horrible ACC and electric window systems that always need repair in which case deduct about $650 for maintaining the electric junk and take away another $350 for having no sliding roof.

The diesel S's were US market cars, sounds like a Euro delivery. MB will do certain things for good customers. Heck my SDL was fitted with cloth.

I suspect even today for a good customer they will fiddle with the options.

If its rust free I'd say $2k-$3k.

I have never heard of a W116 300SD with cloth seats- I can't explain that(junkyard swap?). But I am reasonably certain that the car has Chrysler ACC , an electric sunroof (or none at all) and certain it came equipped with a 722.120 automatic slushbox.(there is no reason why you couldn't convert this to a stick, using the 240D flywheel and pedal set from a W116 280S)

To the OP- When I said the car was $2K-ish, I meant if I were trying to buy it. If I were selling, I would be asking $3K +.

Well, my KBB says 6-8 for a #1 car....

I'd py 2 or 2500 for it if the engine is good.... if it had Euro lights and bumpers I'd pay 3-4......if I had the $$$
