mercedes 5cyl in a jeep wrangler.. help is SD

I'll start by saying the motor is attached to the trany and the motor mounts are new. I am in San Diego and if there is anyone in the area that might be able to help with hooking up the wires that would be great. I believe it was on the road before and the previous owner broke the motor mount and that damaged the oil pan. The motor is a 617 and the transmission is a jeep automatic. The guys who had it before unplugged alot of the wires. I know there are alot of wires that will not be needed for the diesel but I am not sure which ones. I bought the manual for the jeep and the mercedes. Any help would be appreciated. I know some of you could hook up one of these motors with your eyes shut... the real test is can you hook one up in a jeep with your eyes open? I tried to post a pic of this but it didn't work for me. I might be able to send pics in an e-mail form.
Thanks for any/all help, Jon

This is an interesting swap that has been discussed here before. Are there pictures of this installation on the web? One point that has come up is the clearance between the front differential and the oil pan. Does it fit?

Are the starter and alternator hooked-up?

You can only post very small pictures here (64K?). Sometimes you can set your camera to take small pictures.

Got any pics of your install? I think that would be a perfect replacement for the underpowered V6.

The alt is hooked up. There is also the a/c pump hooked up too. This jeep was on the road before, the PO had a problem with the motor mounts breaking. this caused the motor to hit the front diff as mentioned. I put new mounts on it and am planning on doing a spring over lift (putting the leaf springs on top of the axle). I want to start the motor before I put more money into the lift and stuff. I have the front end blocked up with a type of dummy shock keeping the motor off the front diff. I am looking for a simple diagram for the fuel and wires, or someone to show me what needs to be hooked up.

The starter is the only electrical required to start the engine. If you can get it to turn over it should start. Don't crank the starter for more than about 15 seconds at a time. Let it cool between attempts.

The glow plug system is needed for operating the vehicle with repeated starts. But if you just want to hear it run you can start it a few times without the glow plugs.

There is a vacuum actuated fuel shutoff on the injection pump. You can actuate the fuel shutoff manually and should know how to do that without having to think about it. When you turn off the key it sends vacuum to the fuel shutoff.

If you are not familiar with the idea of a run away diesel, now would be the time to learn it. Have a way to block intake air into the engine or have a CO2 fire extinguisher handy.

The only wires are to the starter and alternator obviosly and the glow plugs. If you want to start the engine find a way to get power to the glow plugs for about 20 seconds and then crank it up. When you want to shut off the engine apply vac to the shutoff diaphram or hit the red shot off sticker on the linkage

Here is the link:

It is a bit lengthy, and the first batch of pictures are from someone elses toyota conversion they had a 300D (NA) and used a flywheel from a gasser (donor unknown) and he welded two bellhousings together. I got info from a fellow who years ago mastered a divorced TC to match to the merc tranny, I plan on the same once I work the bugs out of the Merc powertrain
enjoy the reading

This motor doesn't have the same shut off that you are talking about. the linkage was removed for some reason. I found the selonoid for the glow plugs it looks like they used one from a starter or some thing like that.

Thanks for everyones help.

I will try to post some pics of it this weekend.
