axle whine?
Heading to the garage to take off the rear passenger wheel to see what is causing the whine.
What exactly does this completely-new-to-auto-mechanics-before-www.peachparts.com-guy look for? Also, in case of worst case scenario, will the rear axle of a 1986 300d fit on my current 1980 300sd? Thanks.

Nope, slowing and turning right. Guess I should have mentioned that.

Not sure what you consider a whine, but if your hearing it on loading and unloading corners (turning) it usually points to a wheel bearing. I've always referred to it as a roar or hum. I've got a rear diff that whines though
See if you can stop and start the sound by turning the car.
