Replaced fuel filter for my 97 E300, now won't start
Hi all,
I'm brand new to this diesel department, and this is my first MB as well. I search all over the forum but could not locate the infomation that I need, so I have to start this thread. I just replaced a prefilter (inline?), and main fuel filter for my 1997 E300, and now the car won't start. What I did was, replace the prefilter first, then started the car; it ran fine for about couple minutes. I then shut it off, and replace the fuel filter. I did filled up the filter with clean diesel, and start the car. The car did started, and ran about 30 sec, and then shut off. Now it won't start. I found that a lot of people saying that if the air got into the fuel line, then I have to crank a lot. How much is a lot? I did cranked about 7-8 times; of course each time with less then 20 seconds, and 20 second break in every three cranks. And every crank with the gas pedal to floor. What should I do from this point? Does this model come with manual hand pump? If so, where is it located? Thanks in advance for any feedback, Best regards, |

See your owners manual. Twenty seconds is not long enough to cool the starter motor during this operation!
If you didn't replace the o-ring on the prefilter, it may be admitting air. Or you could have fractured the pipe from the fuel heater to the prefilter. They get very fragile with age. |

Did you replace the pre-filter O-ring? It does not come with the replacement pre-filter for some reason and the old one is usually stuck to the pre-filter when you remove it.
What color are your fuel lines? Specifically, the one from the lift pump to the pre-filter. Since you have to remove that one to change the pre-filter, a old stiff fuel line with start to suck in air if you budge it even just a little.

Thank you all,
You are right, I forgot to put the o-ring on my prefilter, and that is the problem. Replaced the o-ring, few more cranks, now it run like a charm. Thank you all again for your input. Good day, Tim |
