84 300d turbo problems?

When I give it throtle when in park and under the hood, after I let off,I hear a loud whine of the turbo spooling down. Is this normal? Checked the shaft, and there seems to be a little play side to side. Not much but you can feel it. Searched on the rebuilding the turbo and can handle it, but how do I know which turbo I have? Does anyone know the best place to get the parts? Thanks in advance Jimmy

How do you know it is coming from the turbo? Are you having any performance problems? Any oil leaks from the turbo? Is all the piping connected secure?

Make sure it is coming from the turbo using mechanic stethascope.

Not having any problems at all. Was checking out some stuff under the hood and heard this whining sound after I throttled down. A friend has the same car and it seems to be much less whinning under the same throttle. Maybe its his! Anyway how does one tell if the turbo is getting enough oil? Just trying to head off any potential problems. Maybe I should leave well enough alone? Thanx Jimmy

Well, first make sure it is def coming from the turbo. If everything appears to be connected and you don't see large amounts of oil leaking from the turbo, you should be fine. The turbo may be a little worn, but why fix it if it ain't broke.

The important thing again is to make sure it is coming from the turbo and not something else.
