BEAUTIFUL 1978 300D with 56k Miles

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=170008586148&ih=007&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Someone buy it for me and I'll pay you back. Any guesses as to how much it will sell for?

1978 300D - Somewhere around 188k miles, no reverse, no a/c, no instrument lights, sunroof only works when it's really hot outside, trying it make it more road worthy....

Something is not right. It's got a new speedo without the chrome center button.

Should look like this:

First off I think it is running alittle warm!
Second, my wagon with 215K could have 56K on it by this time tomorrow.....
Texas friendly white, though........

**edit**
The chrome speedo piece fell off either when they were rolling it back, or when it was pulled from another one and installed in this one. It should be at least laying down against the plastic. Warning Will Robinson!! But, even with that clue, it's not like we didn't already "know".............

Either you guys are detectives that are TOO good or cynical as heck!!!
Does the claimed mileage suggest a prima facie odo rollback/replacement?
I do know these models often have odometers that quit or fail eventually....

Well, the REST of the car looks consistent with an ultra low mile car!
The interior and exterior look mint and no cracks on the blue dash.

Suppose it had books and records to back up the claimed mileage? I think there can be things to worry about on a diesel Benz with mileage TOO LOW! if it sat for long periods of time untouched.

I beg to disagree. The B pillar trim has ripped and torn. And since it's a 78, it should have the chrome center cap for the speedo. It's definitely been swapped with a later model's such as one from an 82. The 83-85 had the 125mph speedo.

I do not even look at cars that seller lists.
This isn't the first car. Sometimes he doesn't even bother to carfax himself.
He will also hang up on you if your questions get too unconfortable for him.
He doesn't like to show his cars either.

There's also something not right about the passenger front door, down at the bottom where it meets the front fender and the fender too...in fact the whole bottom of the passenger side of the car looks off...looks like maybe its full of bondo there.

I agree with all of the above cynics...there are one or two dealers in NJ who continuously find these "low mileage" early MB that just so happen to be pre-carfax and exempt from title reporting so there's no way to check them unless they have complete service records...I would bet anything that the car has seen a lot more than the miles on the odometer. The only way to know for sure is to have a service history though.

The speedo has been replaced, but not from a 82. The 82 300D had a 85 mph with a chrome dot. The 83-85 had a 125 mph with a black dot. This 100 mph unit with the black dot looks just like a 83 240D (hope it's geared correctly). BTW, my 82 300D now has a 125 mph unit with a chrome dot that I added (it looks correct, but they never came that way).

Thanks for the correction, I guess I'm not familiar with 240D speedos.

But yeah, the (false) odo reading plus the car's condition shows its true age. Did anybody notice the seller attempted not to photograph the trim that surrounds the door frames? Usually, that trim wrinkles up on a high mileage car. There's some slight hint of it.

Has anyone read this guy's feedback. Just about every page has 3 or 4 negative feedbacks...most of which were mutually withdrawn. I wouldn't give this guy 1 cent.

Why is there a 1978 Texas inspection sticker and no registration sticker?????
The car does look nice, though. Looks like a decent repaint. I see what you mean about the passenger side lower area. Looks funny somehow......

I'm facinated by info such as year/speedo types, and info such as that. Somebody should come up with a thread with this type of info. Many of we MB nerds would dig that.....

excuse the ignorance you respected Mercedes Forensics:
But what is the belted pump in front of the air intake box on the passenger side of the engine?
If i did not know better it would look like an air compressor, but i am sure there is a better explanation.

This guy's feedback combined with unusually low miles and the fact that the speedo is obviousally not original would make me recommend a STRONG PASS on this one.
