My Valve Adjustment SNAFU...
Well, I finally got around to adjusting the valves on my wife's 81-300sd, my first attempt. (I have read all of the threads here and at Diesel Giant and my manual) The 1st valve exhaust lobe is at the 1 position (and also the 3rd intake lobe). I cannot get any of the feeler gauges in the 1st E.
I loosen the top nut and turn the bottom nut a half turn clockwise and no gap. I turn it another half turn clockwise and still no gap...and again. I have depressed the spring by 1/2 inch by now and still NO gap. WHAT am I doing wrong???? I don't even know how to get it back where it was? I am supposed to take this car to the beach with the family tomorrow, any help would be appreciated. Don |

ARGHHHHHH!!
Have I messed up things so I can't get them adjusted? Or, Should i just keep turning the top nut CW until something moves, or what? I went out and moved the top nut way down and still nothing...I have taken something so easy and made it hard...it must have been my Marine training. I have moved that top nut way down, now what as I still have not gap. Don |

If you have turned the upper nut all the way down on the valve and still have no clearance, something isn't right. Is it possible that the valve is rotating along with the nut? |

Do you have the cam lobe pointed AWAY from the rocker?

Well, I finally finished the valve adjustment. Probably a slow-time record: 8hrs.
I was going by the online pictorial from DieselGiant and it states: "Here is the two nut that you will be working with. The top nut it the locking nut, the bottom is the adjustment." I love Diesel Giant's work with nimrod's like me, but the nuts are the opposite of his tutorial. Also, the valve was turning on some of them. Anyway, thanks to others here, I got done. My back hurts and my feet stink, but the job is done. Thanks, Don |

Pete,
I am surprised someone put that together, as that is exactly what I was referring to! That is from Jimmy Buffett, if I am not mistaken. I used to be a big fan. Don |

Diesel giant needs to update his guide. He has it with the bottom nut as the adjusting nut.

Anyway, I don't want to minimize the help that DieselGiant does offer people. Later, Don |
