Diesel injectors wear?

Hello everyone!

I would like some advice on diesel injectors. I have an '82 300D Euro non-turbo. My engine was overhauled about 2 years ago and it runs great, but when idling or at full throttle its throws alot of smoke through the exhaust.

I know the fuel injectors nor the injection pump were touched during the overhaul. They were in very good shape so the mechanic told me it was not worth the price (got to send everythign out of town to an injection lab).

Now two years later, the engine pulls hard and starts at the first try, but I'm concerned about the smoke because I need to go to the emissions test and I'm afraid it won't pass.

Can this smoke be produced by weared out injectors? How can I tell the injectors are weared? Which replacement injectors would you recommend?

Thanks

What color is the smoke (e.g. white, blue/gray, or black)?

Well, when I start it cold in the morning the smoke is a little bit blue. When the engine warms up, the smoke turns a little bit black. If its idling it throws very very little smoke, from idle to 3/4 throttle it smokes a little more, but if I step in the throttle it throws a black cloud. Seems the injection pump is putting to much diesel in the engine or that the diesel is not being burnt.

Does a naturally aspirated engine have an ALDA?

Blue = oil
Black = fuel
white = coolant

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

Others may disagree, but I would say that's pretty normal. How many miles are on it? You could try doing a Diesel purge using the instructions on DieselGiant.com. I can tell you that it is very normal to have a significant amount of black smoke when you floor it.

Where are you located? IIRC, states that require emissions testing for Diesels simply do an opacity test and from the sound of things you should be fine.

Mine also shows a little blue smoke when cold, but blows no smoke when warmed up unless I floor it and then a blow a nice black cloud.

Anyone else wanna chime in on this one?

My car has about 50000 miles after the overhaul. The weird thing the car has, which makes me think something is wrong with th injection, is that I only get like 15 MPG, and there are no leaks.

Thats makes me think maybe the engine is eating all that diesel due to defective injectors or non-calibrated injection pump.

Oh i forgot to mention, I have the car in Costa Rica end every year we have to take the cars to a technical check (brakes, susp, engine, emission) and last december, when my fuel mileage was a lot better, the car barely passed the emissions test. I mean, the car is in great shape, the engine run very hard for a non turbo, but the fuel mileage is poor and there to much smoke. My sister own a turbo 300D and it doesn't throw that much of smoke as mine, and her engine has 300k miles

few things

you have a few issues going on..

1. is fuel quality.... the fuel is less refined down there.. and will produce more smoke...

2. black smoke is a sign of excess fuel... so your fuel system needs adjusting...

If I were in Costa Rica with a diesel car I would buy a diesel injection tester like they sell on eBay and tool company websites. I would read the factory shop manual about how to make my injectors work correctly.

The most common problem with our cars is that the injector nozzles are clogged or leak or both. If needed, new nozzles will give these cars a new lease on life.

There are studies that show that a real two micron fuel filter can make injection components last far longer. I think Caterpiller is a good source of information on this.

************** has on their site a water seperator custom made by Stanadyne IIRC. That may be a good investment in areas where your fuel source and/or quality are questionable.

Your car should be getting mid 20's mpg. Your statement sounds like you really don't know, so do some basic arithmetic to see what it really is.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I know the fuel quality in Costa Rica is pretty bad. That's why everytime I fly down there I take cetane boosters to put in my fuel tank. about the fuel mileage, it's correct Gary F, I did the numbers and I'm getting 15-16 MPG in city and 18-19 MPG in highway.

What I need is some guideline to decide what to do. I was thinking of taking all the injection system out and bring it to States with me so I can take it to a decent diesel lab, but i want to keep expenses low.

I went to a diesel shop and it cost me about $50 to get all 6 tested. One of them had to be disassembled and cleaned and retested. That is what the $50 paid for. I suppose if you wanted to send them to me, I could take it there and have them test it for you. Cost you shipping and something for the test.

thanks for your kind offer aklim. I'll keep it in mind. I'm planning to go to Costa Rica by the end of august, so I'll decide then what to do with the injection parts. Anyway I think I'll so some deeper research to find out how to DIY tune the injectors, if its too difficult I'll bring the parts back to States with me. Have anyone heard about Bosio nozzles? I saw them at diesel giant, and they seem pretty good, but I can't find any info about the in google or yahoo.

Another approach would be to buy a used set from a junkyard or even a member here and have them reworked or rework them yourself before you go to Costa Rica.
