helpful blow-by video

This is a two sided post. First of all, after reading about blow by I found this to be a very inexact science for the common diy'er (myself). So I decided to take a video of the three main dirty but easy tests and then people can comment on them.

I have to admit that this is somewhat selfish because now I get the feedback of many many great mb wrenchers, but it is also for the good of all because these can be used as a reference (good or bad) as to what the dirty standard is.

Please comment on what these videos say about my engine in particular, but also how these can be helpful as a whole.

Those are the basic tests. It does not get more simple than that.

wow looks like it needs a good amount of cranking to get it started.

Are you cranking it up without glowing first? If your doing a glow cycle and its still taking that long and that many cranks I'd think there's something wrong....with a 5 sec glow my car starts in one rotation 99% of the time, two rotations the other 1% and I have quite a bit more blowby than that....

Edit: Me and greasybenz seem to have had the same thought at the same time!

Yes it normally takes that long to start. I thought that was a short start time. When I got the car (2 years ago) it took considerably more than that. Is this a relatively small amount of blow-by?

I also have another video that I was going to post separately but it might be applicable. I'm suspicious of a clogged tank screen. If you watch this next video you can see that when I start the car the fuel in the prefilter seems to be restricted, or sucking air. The hoses are tight at least where they hook to the filter and the steel line.

Is my blow by acceptable?

Anybody have any comments about this next fuel filter video?

hmm, something is wrong. Only time i have to crank that much is if i just changed a fuel filter or a fuel filter is clogged.

humm. That prefilter's action is not normal. A small bubble like when the engine is off is ok. But whel it's running...

Check your metal lines running under the car, and check the rubber line goint to the tank strainer.

Any suggestions on things to check?

How did it sound once it was running? To me it sounded quiet compared to before I timed it.

I have worked on my car quite a bit, but all the experience I have is with this car.

btw the car has 90,000 miles. Any comments on the fuel filter video?

hmm even more odd, 90K miles with that much blow by...

The 300SD i had, had some blow by but not enough to make it dance that much it would just move from side to side. My dads 78 300D doesnt have any blow by and has over 400K miles. And yes the pre-filter video doenst look right either.

hmm... I was unaware that this was a lot of blow-by. I was also unaware that it started hard.

I know that I have MASSIVE vacuum leak because I can hear if when I turn off the car. Does any body have any ways of diagnosing these oddities?

Nice job on the videos. I've only done the "tea kettle" method myself and my cap didn't bounce quite that much. Plus from what I read I think your engine should run a little longer when being smothered before it shuts off. There shouldn't be that much air getting sucked through the prefilter like that. There should be a few bubbles that settle at the top that won't come out but no where near that much. I wouldn't be concerned about the extra revolution to start because that could be a number of things. I'd check valves, injectors, timing, timing chain stretch, ect. before I started worrying about the relation between the blowby and the extra starting revolution.

I would certainly want to have a look at that tank strainer.
Would a leaky primer pump cause an anomoly like that in the prefilter, or does being past that point rule that out?
BTW, your car has a nice smooth little idle going. Is the person starting you car during the videos using the glow cycle? It goes from buzzer to starter right away, but I can't remember if it buzzes during the glow cycle if door open....

i would say that your tank screen is plugged and needs to be cleaned. the fuel looked dark almost blue, and that is what mine looked like when i took it out and had it steamcleaned. it was nasty. but taht much air is not right.

Those are great videos. I'm not sure how accurate the time element is on the video but it looked to me like your engine died in about three seconds. My mechanic told me that anything less than five seconds indicated a problem.

I would like someone who understands these engines to explain to me why they stall when you plug the breather. I understand that pressure builds up in the crankcase but it would not seem to be very much pressure if you can hold your thumb over the vent. What exactly causes the engine to stall?

I haven't tried these tests since I checked out my car before buying it; I suppose I should do them again just to see. Has anyone tried using a pressure gauge to plug the vent?

The cranking time also is not good. Properly glowed (is that the correct tense?), my engine starts in one 'crank' or less.

Jeremy

Nice videos, maybe other memebers should do them as well. I can do a few this weekend if people would like.

Today I gave my car a nice long glow and flicked the key and it started. I mean flick, almost like a snap. I was pretty impressed
