How to do a tuneup on a W124 + how long would it last?

I want to get my 1991 300d 2.5 a bit smoother at idle, and it's not really even bad as it is. I took it to a mechanic, he said he could adjust some things to make it better. My engine shakes some, and he said the engine shouldn't shake, at all. He said it would cost $300-$400 to adjust things to get it right. Even if I spent the money for a mechanic to do get it smoother, I wonder how long it'd stay that way.

I've been told the valves on mine are hydraulic; they can't be adjusted. I think he was talking about looking at the timing chain, adjusting the injection timing (?), and some other things. Is it possible/feasible for a lightweight DIY'er like me to do it? I did put some injector cleaner that he recommended in the fuel tank, but that is obviously a small step toward a better idle.

try a diesel purge and change the fuel filters.

Motor mounts (not a tuneup) would smooth it out as well!

I was going to say the same thing. My E300D had the shakes...did the motor mounts and life is good again.

For a good tuneup, don't forget the plugs and wires.
