Urgent Help Needed - 1998 E300td Window Stuck In Down Position

Please Help - We are expecting rain today. My passenger rear window is stuck in the down position. I held down the unlock button to lower the windows when I heard a cracking sound. Now the window won't raise (both with the key and the button on the console). I hear a cracking noise like plastic pieces shaking around. We are expecting rain. Any fixes or what's the problem??? BTW - It's a 1998 E300 Turbodiesel.

Window lift ist kaput probably. There is a mechanism inside there obviously with a broken piece. You can't know until you open it up and take a look. Get an interior panel puller and go to work removing the interior panel. You probably don't have a panel puller(would be available at any car stereo place or maybe even Best Buy) so improvise one out of a piece of wood or something. You just need something that will get underneath the panel edge and have enough spine to pry the paneling off without scratching or tearing or cutting the soft paneling material or breaking the clips. Get inside there, look around, and see what the culprit is, it might be that it's a $.50 piece of plastic or a $400 complete mechanism. Sometimes you can replace little individual pieces and sometimes you have to go with a complete assembly. Find this stuff at the dealer. If you don't like dealer price jot down the part# and order from Phil if it's any cheaper. But the main thing is to get inside there and prop the glass up so you don't get rain/homeless peeps in your car. Good luck.

Two thoughts, if part of the glass is still up and you can get ahold of it, you might be able to bring the glass back up. Then if mine were outside, it would be Hillbilly White Trash time with some tape to hold it up.

If you can't get ahold of it then you're going in. Not too bad and you might be able to raise it until you are able to get parts/repair/replace.

Here is a link with some nicer pictures (sorry, blasphemous outside link)

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/1226700-diy-pictorial-window-regulator-replacement.html There probably are some here also if you search, but this has pictures and would easily let you know if you wanted to attempt. Again, I've helped by brother do his on some older MB's and not a big deal.
