Being a hiker in the great Northwest means a lot of driving on forest service roads to get to the trailhead. These roads are unpaved, potholed, washboarded, steep, and for the most part travelled by SUV's.

The 126 performs like a champ in this environment. It just eats up the bumps and handles perfectly. Its funny to watch people in SUV's bouncing around inside their cabins as they rumble over the rough road while I'm cruising in comfort down a steep climb. Pretty cool.

I did hit a snag though. When I was descending, I put it in 2nd and let the engine do the braking. After about 45 minutes the road levelled out and I finally engaged the throttle again. When I did, the gas pedal was sticky. Actually, its only sticky when you initially engage the pedal. I have to give it a little push with my foot and then the pedal works normally. I lubed all of the ball joints on the throttle assembly, but no change. Any ideas?

bent linkage? check everything from the back of the pedal all the way thou...maybe somthing is blocking the linkage (running to the bowden cable for the trans) on top the valve cover?

Funny, I was just up in the mountains with my w123 300d euro and was driving on some nasty roads as well. My friends were also up there so we had 2 cars, mine and a 2003 ford ranger. Going up and down the mountain roads we flew compared to him. They were bouncing around and looked very uncomfortable. It was a little bumpy in my car but not too much worse than driving on our highways.

Turned out to be a broken diesel pedal. Surprised to find out that these things are held together with just a rubber grommet.

Installed a new pedal tonight - worked like a charm.

Interestingly, shifts are smoother now. Also have to wonder if this will improve the cruise control. Mine works, but has been prone to cutting out when going up hills and has been difficult to set. My understanding is that the accellerator pedal moves in conjunction with the throttle variations as the car moves over differing terrain. Since the connection between the accellerator pedal and the throttle assembly is a simple rubber grommet, I can see how a worn pedal and spotty cruise might be connected. In any case, its a cheap fix that could save time and money when trying to diagnose problems.

I too had a 85 300SD, it was the best vehicle I ever had, 195,000 miles! Bought it new and it never cost me a dime. it finally succumbed to body rot and steering and rear end problems - car was no longer safe to let my wife drive. Bought a new E320 in 2003, not a bad car but not like my King of The Road. Enjoy yours!

the CDI or the gazzer?

It would have to be the gasser, since the E320CDI didn't go on sale in the US until 2005.

You should try a 300TD on dirt roads. I whooped up on a 240HP WRX with my 300TD (NA even 80HP!). He was setup for roads and had to feather it over bumps. I loved it!
