White Smoke in the Morning
OK guys, I've owned this baby about a week - she's got 215,xxx miles on and I've driven a total of 120 of those myself. She's running smooth, fair mpg, clean air filter. P'Owner stated regular oil changes, fluids etc. Auto. Tranny fluid was low - topped that off. Other fluids check'd fine.
Feels like she shifts late into second but not consistently off. This morning I was running her in the driveway to get her up to temp (80 - 90'C) to add tranny fluid and I noticed the smoke. White. When the smoke was heaviest the temp was about 40-50. Eased off as she got hot. Who's out there and what can you tell me? By the way, Novice Novice could easily be my handle. I'll let you know when that changes. Thanks all. T

Gotta git out back closer to smoke instead of looking over your shoulder. Try holding a rag over the exhaust pipe that smoke can breath through and sniff for unburnt fuel - not uncommon, while somebody else starts the car and hits the throttle. And with 215k on the clock it probly needs injector pump timing to compensate chain stretch, hence incomplete combustion. And could need a new timing chain too - at/near 10 degrees stretch is considered excessive.

DD has it right. White smoke means unburnt fuel. This is either a fuel quantity issue (too much fuel) or a timing issue (fuel being injected at the wrong time).

I love this car.
Quite a day.
The smoke in the AM was nothing. Got on the highway for my commute - 50 miles - cruisin' - bright sky, roof is greased and open - Ipod in the tape deck. Gorgeous. I love this car. When I pulled into town all was well - until - major loss of power. She wouldn't go above 20mph and that was chug chug chuggggg. LOTS o' smoke. Flashers on, intermittent power - rpm's down, then stuck high, then down. I probably need to grease the ball joints on the throttle. Briefly back to normal - shifted up into 3rd. Then nothin' - worse yet - stalled. (( Reminiscent of rush hour in a '71 VW Transporter. On a stall I used to bail out the driver's door and under the bus with a screwdriver. My lady hops into the driver's seat to stomp on the break while I jump the starter - Only on the left coast would anyone put up with this. But, by the hundreth time we were pretty fast.)) Still sittin'. I'm used to driving a standard so it took me a minute to realize that I had to shift to neutral to crank her. I made it to my destination and pulled out my only manual (Haynes. I really don't know what to think of this book. It's just ok.) I turned straight to "Troubleshooting." 1. Engine stumbles on acceleration. 2. Engine stalls. 3. Engine lacks power. Out of these three symptoms, two suggest a clogged filter. I'm thinking injection too and fantasizing about a quick fix diesel purge. Meanwhile, stall, stall, stall. To make a long story short I got on the phone with Peter Vandermeer of Norwood, MA (recommended here - thank you) and chatted him up about diesel while I goosed it -Still parked with my foot hard on the brake. High high rpm's - alot of noise and smoke and thinkin' hard about just blowin' fuel through those clogged filters as fast as possible. Best thing for it. Ran her hard this way for about ten minutes and then gave it a rest. Drove around the block and drove her home three hours later. She's running better than ever. Better get to that chain issue - but first I've got to track down filters. Whew.
