It's a spring trap. Looks like you caught some!

Seriously, it's the resistance loads that allow the a/c blower to operate at different speeds.

WOW,

that's funny right ther.

Thanks, btw, is this something that can fail?

currently when my CCU is on the minimum setting I am not getting any voltage at the Monovalve, would these two problems be related? i.e. bad CCU?

Although anything is possible, it is unlikely that the load resistors will fail. They are pretty robust. Does the fan work on all speeds? Any speeds? No speeds? The CCU is indeed a troublemaker. Do a search for "ACC," "blower," or similar terms. You'll find lots of threads involving resoldering the pc board of the CCU. Now that you've found the resistor unit, check it out, make sure the plug and socket are clean and not corroded, blow out the coils of nichrome wire and get all the fried bugs out.

Yes the fan works on high only. And only when the it's blowing, it only blows out the defrost vents. i have been searching, but I havent turned up any exacting info., except that the ccu is probably the culprit due to the loss of power at the monovavle. As far as why no air out of the center vents, I guess I'll hit one part at a time.

Okay still laughing here,I had a 300d that was stuck in defrost mode(failsafe so if you lose vacuumn your windshield will be clear). That being said if you lose the vaccumn and its failsafe open you need vaccumn to route it other places where the air is directed. If you do a search for mity vac it may lead you how to test the vacumm lines,on my vehicle the battery acid had melted the vacummn lines under the battery,I was able to cut the hard plastic lines and repair them with new rubber tubing, this cured my airflow problems.I am not sure if that will take care of your blower speed, but it may be a direction for you to look at ,best of luck,Johnny

Thanks Johnny,

That sounds like the vacuum thing might be a good direction to head, because I was having problems with my door locks and engine shut down, occasionally.

thanks again

Bob,

I replaced all of my fuses a couple of weeks ago. Nothing looked odd at the time.

I have checked all the push buttons on the CCU and I definitely get defrost and the two farthest vents but no middle vents. Sometimes I get blower when I push the ec button and sometime I dont. SO I think I am going to start with vacuum and then work my way into the CCU.

Thanks for the help guys.

MY '83 had a shorted wire on the trany kick down. Everytime I floored it (you know, like to pull into traffic?), it would blow the fuse and the CC would go to full defrost. Drove me crazy until I guessed how it was happening. But, other things can foul you up too. Seems to me that is the CC unit that you take out and resolder the connections. And we don't even want to talk about vacuum pods. My '83 has a bad one that controls the center vents. I just plugged the hose and wedged the flapper valve open for the center vents. If I want them off now, I just turn them to close. That problem did make a vacuum leak.
