1975 240D exhaust downpipe broken - removal ideas?

The downpipe from the manifold is broken where it slides into the main straight exhaust pipe (proper name?). I can cut the bolts off the manifold, but I'm a little stumped as to how to remove the 6" piece that's broken off inside the main exhaust pipe.

Is there a special tool/technique forthis? I was thinking to holding a hacksaw blade and cutting two sides of the inner broken pipe and then using a cold chisel, but that seems to be the hard way to do it.

It's a fairly long connection, maybe 6", I've got the new pipe - $85 from the dealer.

I've never used a pipe expander, would one be able to expand two thicknesses of pipe? Would heating the pipe help?

THANKS!

Are there open seams cut down the sides on the main exhaust pipe where they join? I would work them, torch em and bang em with chisel to loosen em up. And cut into the sleeve if you must - knowing you can braze it later. We dont hear much about Alaskan 240D's. Is there a thriving population of MB diesels up there?

Yours obviously isn't a turbo model, so it is different than mine. But, when I had to replace my broken downpipe, it was stuck like Chuck. What I did was to stick a 2x2 in the pipe and wrench it back and forth until it let go.
