Well it was a good day in the garage. The pull went smoothly except for the motor mount bolt that is directly under the arm that comes off the motor, that was a pain! It took about 5 hours to pull the engine. The only connection I missed was the oil pressure gauge hose. Not bad for my first real (non VW) engine pull. The car seems to have had transmission work recently. The shift linkages, flex plate and center driveshaft bearing all look brand new. I discovered that the exhaust was hung with rubber bands . I think I will name this car MacGyver.
What is the solution for attaching the rear transmission mount in its new, farther back location?

At an angle. You will also need to grind off a bit of the corssmember to clear thew tranny. BTW, use the one from the manual.

Thanks FI
I looked at the 116 that I am getting the "new" engine out of and did not see this. Do you possibly have a picture?

i am not familiar with the 116. i dont know if it has the second engine shock for sure.
on the tranny, since the mounting points are tapered you may need to buy a different cross member. a shorter one. to get far enough back. i believe that is what i did. tom w

I've never done this swap, but didn't I read a post about using the auto tranny, 4 bolt cross member for this application?

I saw another post where they just turned the cross member diagnaly. I think I will try that, and if it doesn't work I will try making mine more narrow to fit or sanding Old300D a PM.
The junk yard engine is not looking good. I have found a wagon engine with 70K for a good price. Is there a easy way to block off the provision for the leveling suspension on a wagon engine? Thanks

i would be leery of mounting the cross member diagonally. but if it vibrates i suppose you could deal with it at that time.

Maximum fuel milage is at an engine RPM near where the engine produces maximum TORQUE. If the torque peak rpm is the same for both the 240 and the 300 then the 300 engine should get about the same fuel economy as the 240 with the same rear end.
