Question about 722.3 MB Trannys....Tougher than we think?
 

Hi all,

I was down under my car inspecting rust damage and formulating plans the other day when I noticed that there appears to be mounting "ears" on the back of the transmission. Now, these ears look very similar to the ones on many american truck/suv transmissions for mounting 4x4 transfer cases.

So therefore, my question is this: Was the 722.3 Automatic transmission used on the Unimog, etc? I know that in europe there are Unimogs with diesels, so it would stand to reason.......And in that case, there shouldn't be any concern for the transmission in pulling snowmobile/jetski/motorcycle trailers, etc.....Especially if one were to put a secondary transmission cooler in after the radiator heat-exchanger cooler.

Just a thought I had.

However, to me, they looked very similar to the mounts for the engine shocks. I haven't crawled under there to see if there was any provision for mounting to the structure. If not, as you said, maybe they are for mounting in another vehicle.

I'm gussing that a 722 is plenty stout, IIRC isn't it used behind the M117 engine as well?

I've seen many photos from a friend in Europe showing these cars pulling trailers and the like. As long as you keep a low speed I would imagine they could handle it.

I recently towed my friends Honda about 1.2 miles with mine going super slow...didn't stress it at all.

Maybe this is why some sort of fluid leaks next to TC now :P

I think its probably always been there, who knows.

they could just be ears to put hooks onto and move the tranny easily once its out of the car.. like how the engine has lil things on it to hook chains onto when removing.. i like that

if you look at some american trans such as the gm turbo 350/400's they have little ears on the side of the case right up by the torque converter,they are used in the assembly line to hold the transmission shaft up to put the guts in.could be along the same lines.

I agree that they are probably for the assembly line, probably for them being moved along to the spot for assembly to the engines. I believe in the factory they work(ed) from above and below doing engine/tranny installation, they were already together, then lowered in from above and workers put everything together up top and underneath at the same time.

I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to when you say "ears" but if it is the section with the two holes that is located between the pan and the rear transmission crossmember support then you are missing an exhaust pipe support.

The "ears" mentioned are the two large holes on the back of the transmission in the photo of post #1. So there should be and exhaust pipe support attached there? I have never seen one with this in place (Of course every one I have looked at may have had exhaust work done.) Is there a possibility of a photo?

I wonder how much MB wants for it? They can be pretty proud of misc. brackets like this.

Thanks for the info guys, your ideas make better sense than a simple T-case mount...........

But ya, from what studying I've done, looks like the 722.3 is a really stout tranny.
