I want to say they did the switch in 1979 or 1980.

Must have been after the 79 model year because i still have the loop style.

1979. One of my 79s has loops, the other pencils.

1978 when the first 300SD (turbo) was introduced. I know because I have one.

Turbos always had the pencil type. N/A engines switched over in mid year in '79
