85 300sd - Aux Fan Problem

The aux fan for the radiator seems to be working fine except for one thing.

Between the fan blades and the radiator are three "spokes" that act as some kind of support or attchment for the fan. The fan blades are scraping two of these spokes when the fan engages, making an annoying noise.

Looking at it, the only thing I can come up with is that somebody tightened the fan blade unit too tightly because the "spokes" don't really have any room for movement. Is there a way to disassemble the fan and maybe install some sort of spacer to move the blades further away from the radiator?
