this is one of the things the dog and i disagree on.

the fifth gear will slow down the engine. it will push your economy over 30 mpg even if driving 75 i think. you will only need to down shift if climbing.

these are torque motors. the only reason benz didnt put fivers on all of them is that they were seldom used in a way that they felt they really needed them especially here with a 55 mph speed limit.

now though, at the speed folks travel today on the interstate, you can really use the fifth gear. several folks here have them and they all love them.

just try to pry a fiver out of anybody's hand.

it will have to be a cold dead hand to get one i bet.

With my 240s I hit 5th gear at 55/60 mph if the road is pretty flat, any hills its back to 4th. Ive been getting 36, 37 mpg lately but thats at speeds of +-65 mph. A friend of mine found one on England's ebay, cost him something like $1500 including freight.

I've found that my engine can take anything I throw at it above 1500rpm. Cruising 30mph in 4th is no problem.

yeah, this is what i find too. unless in a hurry i dont rev the 240s to the redline. running them to the redline as opposed to going 3/4 of the way really doesnt produce much extra ooomph. imho.
