Talking Happy Car - New IP/New Conpressor & R-12

I just got back from out of town and picked up my 300D with a new (reman.) IP installed. The IP made a considerable difference. I had a pesky fuel leak that wasn't cured by replacing the seals, and an intermittent rough idle when hot. I would also get an occasional sound like an injector nailing. I got sick of messing with it and had Phil hook my up with a reman. IP. The car now idles perfectly smooth at about 550 rpm and has very good power at all rpm. I was really surprised at how much smother the engine feels now. I know these IPs are "never" supposed to fail, but they do apparently wear to the point of affecting performance.

Coincidentally, my AC compressor also ate itself after running 150K miles on 134a. I was never thrilled with the 134a performance, so I had the system restored to R-12. Now I have "real" AC again, feels good. The only problem left seems to be a "sticky" monovalve, because I occasionally get a blast of hot air after the cars has been off for a few minutes (like a fuel stop). The diaphragm looks OK, so I suspect the check valve in the valve body. I'll probably just replace the entire valve.

BTW, I also solved my flaky ignition switch problem (it sometimes needed to be jiggled to get the blower to run). It wasn't the main switch or the tumbler, just the electric portion of the switch:

Less than $30 for the part.

I'm glad to hear your reman IP worked out fine. That is the heart of the diesel. I wonder if the previous pump ever had Bio run in it before?

I believe that the blast of hot air you mention is one of the great mysteries of German engineering. They had in mind that the controls should come up in defrost to blow out the condensate in the AC or something, there was a reason I am sure. Its a "normal" oddity that many have asked about before, ie why does the AC blow hot and all the moisture come out on the inside of the windshield after it was running cold just before the engine was shut off momentarily?
I believe they finally got rid of that in the 202 chassis or something.
I am going to have my 300TD converted back to R12 also, I was really unhappy with the 134A it would freeze up and the AC shop had no clue why. Then the compressor ate its guts. Oh, I guess I need one of those too. DraT!

AFAIK, my IP never had anything except diesel in it. I've had the car for 5 years/ 180K miles and I don't think there was much BD or WVO around 5 years ago. I think the IP just plain wore out.

I'm not sure about the hot air thing, mine never did that before. I may have gotten a little warm air, but this is about 30 seconds of really hot air. The monovalve insert "looks OK" but I'm beginning to suspect the check valve is sticking. I'll let you know if a new monovalve fixes it. Aside from this issue, the R-12 is great. I shouldn't have waited so long to switch back.

Congrats........you're now in Hattie territory for expenditures.

But, a properly working a/c system in the summer is a pleasure to be sure.

The SD, knock on wood, is doing a terrific job on Freeze-12. Had no problems with 90 degree ambients in the sun yesterday. I keep my fingers crossed with it..........has to be at least five years or so on such a system.

I told my wife that I'm secretly buying a new car one part at a time, and that it should only cost about $200K, and she thought I was kidding.

Working AC is good, I drove the 240D across county last weekend (while the 300D was in the shop). It's slow, but it has a good R-12 system too. It was about 100-105 F in NE on Sunday, and the car stayed pretty cool.
