Thumbs up Adhesive remover for old hood pad?

What should I use to get the rest of the old adhesive off? I know the 3M stuff is what I need to glue it.

Maybe Goof-Off and a scotchbrite?

When I replaced mine I used some citrus cleaner degreaser stuff from Wal-mart. It was in an orange spray bottle. Worked really well. Also find a plastic scaper, it will allow you to scape off the big chunks without damaging the paint. I used my shop vac first with the scraper to get as much of the old pad out of the way. Place some plastic or a drop cloth over the front end to keep the junk out of your car and to help with the clean up. If you have an air compressor that will help clean up you hood also. Good luck!

3M adhesive remover, they make it in a liquid or spray can.i just did mine and if you still have the hood on and in the normal up position, spray it on to the point of running and wipe off what runs.let work for a minute or so and then scrape off with razorblade or whatever.it works best if somewhat wet.also work about a square foot area at a time.otherwise it will dry out and you'll have to redo.also to glue back on use the 3M super trim adhesive.if you read on the back of the general trim adhesive it says(not for headliners or hood insulating pads)

When i did mine, i scraped all of the big chunks off and used the super adhesive...there's no way I was going to get it to the point of being 'clean' of residual debris. I can say that there's no chance that it's ever going to come loose unless I want it to. That 3m super is some *strong* stuff.

What is so great about a hood pad?

Good thread. Reminds me to clean my hood while my engine is out. Great info too on how to do it. Hope i remember this in morning. Please, what is so great about a hood pad? I do not understand and dont want to search at the moment. Thanks.

It keeps the noise down slightly, but more importantly, protects the paint on the top of your hood from heat damage.

Walmart has plastic putty knives in a three pack. Scrape off everything you can with them so surface is pretty flat then just glue on new pad. All you are trying ot do is leave no bare metal and make a good bonding surface for the new pad.

one thing i forgot to mention, when your done scraping.go over the whole hood area with laquer thinner, also do as the can says, spray 3 coats on the pad and hood, let solvent flash off, last coat opposite of the first 2.i sprayed mine from front to back on the first 2 then side to side on the last coat.and make the last coat heavy.the pad really sucks up the adhesive, basically the last coat i burned up what was left in the can.you can do it with one can.

one more thing, make sure to tuck the edges in under the lip around the outside.the previous pad on mine wasn't and looked like crap,i also think this helped it work loose.

I agree, new hood pads look better...

I'm a believer and have recently replaced two of these pads. I don't really think it reduces the noise that much. It just makes a statement about your pride in maintaining your vehicle... and it's better than having an old pad that is forever breaking up with chunks falling off due to more than 2 decades of deterioriation... but here is my question... why all the fuss about the old glue that no one will see once the new pad is installed?

Use googone. Goof-off will strip the paint off. Goo gone wont.

So it will stick properly to the underside of the hood...
